I believe i made a thread about this once, but that was a while ago, so i'd like to ask again.
It's exactly what it sounds like- what caused your Mourning? I don't really have any idea for mine; i'd like to get some other perspectives.

In my Ebberon it was because of a secret Cannith project to create an artificial 14th plane, which was meant to be the Plane of Magic that they could tap into and use to fuel the war. The experiments, while initially promising, caused the area of the Mournland to become a manifest zone of corrupted magic, while everyone who might have known how to tap into the plane's magic reserves and possibly fix it was killed in the initial event.
So in my world, not only is there a chance of reversing the Mourning, but that's also the equivalent of a planar A-bomb out there in Ebberon's planar system that could reignite the war if anyone learned about it or how to harness it. That way if the players ever make it that far you can present them with the dilemma of "fix the Mournlands and risk knowledge of the 14th plane falling into the wrong hands, or leave the land scarred to protect the world from something potentially worse?"
*edit* looks like i answered that on your last post already, sorry for the double post
Honestly, it would depend on the needs of my campaign. I wouldn't want to tie myself to an explanation unless I had no choice. That way, if I need to come up with something on the fly for my specific campaign, the option is available to me.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
