Wondrous Item, rare

The Continuity of Towns is a simple, leatherbound novel, with golden embroidery on the front and sides. The cover displays a vaguely humanoid shape reading a book whilst sitting in a tavern seat. On the inside cover, there is a list of names under the phrase "special thanks", written in the reader's preferred language. This list displays the names of every sentient being the reader has spoken to in the past 24 hours (Player Characters should only be included at the DM's discretion.).  Once per day, any literate creature may begin reading The Continuity of Towns. If they choose to do so, they must succeed on a DC 20 wisdom saving throw to prevent themselves from reading the rest of the novel. If the story is finished, the following effects happen:

One person is chosen from the "special thanks" list, and becomes the Main Character (MC) of the novel.

Reading the story takes [roll]2d4[/roll] rounds to complete.

[roll]1d6[/roll] is rolled, and depending on the result, one of the following stories is chosen, and relevant effects follow once the story is completed:

6: Heroism - The MC of the story thinks back on their recent interaction with the reader. Fearing they may need assistance, the MC gears up as best as they can before setting off to find the reader. As the story is finished, the MC is magically teleported to wherever the reader is, prepared to the best of their extent to assist the reader. After an hour, or when the MC is reduced to 0 HP, the MC disappears.

5: Present - The MC of the story remembers a gift they had meant to give to the reader, but forgot to hand them when they last spoke. Managing to find their misplaced gift, they set off to give it to the MC. As the story is finished, the MC appears before the reader with a gift, whatever the MC thinks the reader might like. Once the gift has been accepted, the MC disappears.

4: Tutorial - The MC, remembering what the reader was planning on doing today- (regardless of whether or not it was actually mentioned to them-) remembers a helpful piece of information they know about the MC's current goal. They set off to find the reader, before they forget such a useful tip. As the story is finished, the MC appears before the reader, giving the reader any useful information they have on the MC's current plans. If they don't have any knowledge on the topic, they give advice on whatever topic they're most expert in. Once the knowledge has been passed to the reader, the MC disappears.

3: True (Love?) - The MC can't seem to stop thinking about the reader, whatever relevant feelings they have towards said person being described in detail within the story. Eventually, they can't keep their thoughts to themselves, and set off to confess to the reader. As the story is finished, the MC appears before the reader, and confesses their true feelings to the reader. This can be love, hate, general confusion, curiosity, etc. Once the MC has finished getting their feelings out, they disappear.

2: Vengeance - The MC remembers something the MC has done to wrong them- however slight- and decides to get their revenge in their own special way. As the story is finished, the MC appears before the reader, and enacts their revenge upon them. Depending on who the MC is, this can be something minorly annoying or majorly harmful- a random child might simply splash you with water, a bartender might ban you from their establishment, and a disguised dragon might polymorph you into a frog. Once the act of revenge has been finished, the MC disappears.

1: Betrayal - The MC becomes paranoid over something the reader said recently, and their thoughts turn almost manic as they fall deeper and deeper into their mind. Deciding that the only way they can keep themselves safe is to take the reader's life, they gear up as best as they can, and set off to slay the reader. As the story is finished, the MC nearby the reader in their best equipment, attacking and surprising them. Once the reader has died, or the MC is reduced to zero hitpoints, the MC disappears.

Upon the disappearance of the MC at the end of the story, the MC reappears back in their original location, unharmed by the events of the story. Usually, Main Characters brush off the events of the story as a daydream, but can be convinced it was real if told otherwise.
