Rod, rare

This six inch long, one inch diameter rod might at first appear to be composed of wood, stone, or some other mundane material. However, those who know the arcane arts know that its true properties run much deeper. If you touch this rod to a solid, non-magical object or powder and speak its command word as an action, the rod's material composition changes to match that object, without changing its shape or size. The rod mimics the object's physical properties nearly perfectly - however, it is highly resistant to damage, and cannot be split apart. A successful DC 15 Intelligence (Investigation) check reveals the falsity of the material, though not necessarily its magical qualities. Despite its fraudulent nature, any information gleaned from the rod about the material it is mimicking can be reliably assumed to be true of the original material.

The rod can fulfill many of the mundane purposes of the material it is mimicking, without being destroyed or altered. The rod can be heated or cooled, but cannot exceed the temperatures required to evaporate its material. If the material in question is flammable, the rod can be set aflame, emitting dim light to a radius of 15ft, and producing the expected odor to the same range. The flame extinguishes itself after one hour. If the material could be used to mark or write on a surface, such as with chalk, it can still do so, but any marks it leaves fade after one hour. If the material could be dissolved in water or another medium, such as with ink, the rod can be dipped and swirled in that medium for one minute to create a suspension of its material in the chosen medium, filling six cubic inches with the resulting fluid, which disappears after one hour.

If the material is radioactive or otherwise dangerous, such as is the case with uranium and some molds, its effects extend out to a range of 15ft. Any affected creature must make the relevant saving throw once every minute, with a save DC of 10, suffering the negative effects on a failure. Creatures who touch the rod with exposed skin must make this save every round. Fluid suspensions or marks created with such materials impose their effects when imbibed or touched respectively. Any affected creature is cured after one hour.

The rod can be used to replace the material components of spells, and is not consumed when it does so. While mimicking a component material, the rod is considered to have a value of 250gp for that purpose. If the spell requires multiple of a single component, such as with the jacinth required by the spell astral projection, the rod can replace only one of those components. Example materials are listed below, but the rod is not limited to those listed. In order for the rod to mimic a material, the material must be able to retain its solid form at room temperature.

Example Materials
Ink, as a solid brick or powder.
Gem-Infused Chalk.
Coal, Charcoal, Phosphorous, or Incense.
Bone, Leather, Cloth, Herbs, Mushrooms, Wood, or other organic material.
Hazardous molds, such as brown or yellow mold.
Glass, Clay, Ceramic, Sand, or Stone.
Gemstones, such as Ruby or Diamond, including in dust form.
Metals, such as Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Adamantine. If the metal is attuned to a specific vibration, such as those created by a sound or a dimension, the rod retains that attunement.
