This dark iron ring is set with a piece of amethyst that never quite seems to be well-lit, even in direct sunlight. Tendrils of smoke and darkness seem to twirl in the crevices of this crude stone.
Dark Desolation. While wearing the ring, you are shrouded in a mantle of darkness that clings to you and moves with you. The space occupied by you is always considered to be in dim light, and all illumination levels within 30 feet of you are also dimmed slightly. Additionally, whenever you make a Charisma (Intimidation) check, you can treat a d20 roll of 9 or lower as a 10.
Deception Spells. This ring has 5 charges. It regains 1d4 + 1 expended charges daily at dusk. While wearing the ring, you can cast the following spells from it, expending the necessary number of charges: mislead (3 charges), mirror image (2 charges), blur (1 charge), or darkness (1 charge).
Shadow Form. While wearing the ring, you can cast the true polymorph spell without expending a spell slot or components, but it only targets yourself and you may only transform into a shadow. You may revert to your original form as a bonus action, and after losing this form, you regain the ability to cast the spell in this way when you finish a long rest.
Like the normal true polymorph spell, you must maintain your concentration in order to keep the spell active. After one hour, the effects will be permanent (unless you use your bonus action to revert back to your original form, or when your shadow form loses all of its hit points) and you no longer need to maintain your concentration to remain in your shadow form.
While polymorphed in this way, your shadow form gains the following additional features:
- Shadow Sight. You can see normally in dim light and darkness, both magical and nonmagical, to a distance of 120 feet.
- Shadow Magic. You can cast the Deception Spells granted by the ring, expending the charges as normal.
- Shadow Veil. You are always under the effects of a pass without trace spell.
Sentience. This ring is a sentient chaotic evil item with an Intelligence of 10, a Wisdom of 16, and a Charisma of 18. The ring can speak, read, and understand Common, Abyssal, and Undercommon; and can communicate telepathically with its wearer. In addition, the ring has hearing and darkvision to a distance of 120 feet.
Personality. The ring's prolonged existence has left it generally indifferent to most things, but it maintains its innate cruel and macabre disposition. The ring has no apparent long-term goals, but due to its reticent and mysterious nature, it can be difficult to discover and divulge its true intentions.
The ring craves isolation, and it likes keeping within the darkest and loneliest spaces of the world. When not in these spaces, however, the rings enjoys instilling fear in others, but especially in innocents and those who oppose the ring or its wearer.
Curse. Once you don this cursed ring, nothing short of a wish spell will allow you to doff it.
Whenever you use this ring's Shadow Form property, you must make a DC 15 Charisma saving throw. You have disadvantage on this saving throw if you are in the Shadowfell. On a failed save, you are possessed by the sentience and personality of this ring, or you are not possessed on a successful one. This possession lasts until your shadow form ends. If your shadow form becomes permanent while possessed, you can remake this saving throw once every hour, ending the possession on a success.
While possessed, you are incapacitated and you lose control of your body. The ring's sentience and personality now controls your shadow form (at DM's discretion) but doesn't deprive you of awareness. While possessing your shadow form, the ring's sentience retains its alignment, and its Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. It otherwise uses the shadow's statistics, along with the additional features granted by the ring's Shadow Form property.
