Traits

Ambusher. In the first round of a combat, the Misstahen has advantage on attack rolls against any creature it surprised.

Mimicry. The Misstahen can mimic any sounds it has heard, including voices. A creature that hears the sounds can tell they are imitations with a successful DC 16 Wisdom (Insight) check.

Natural Camouflage: The Misstahen has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks when attempting to hide in forest terrain or in dim light.

Dive Attack. If the Misstahen is flying and dives at least 30 feet toward a target and then hits with a bite attack, the attack deals an extra 10 (3d6) damage to the target.

Flyby. The Misstahen doesn’t provoke an opportunity attack when it flies out of an enemy’s reach.

False Appearance. While the Misstahen remains motionless and unfurls its front plumage, it can mimic the appearance of a goddess-like entity. A successful DC 18 Insight check can see through this illusion.

Actions

Multiattack. The oni makes two attacks with its beak.

Beak Snap. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 15 ft., one creature. Hit: 10 (3d6) piercing damage, and the target must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the target is pulled to a space within 5 feet of the Misstahen and is grappled.

Swallow. The Misstahen makes a Beak Snap attack against a Medium or smaller creature it is grappling. If the attack hits, the creature is swallowed, and the grapple ends. The swallowed creature is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the Misstahen, and it takes 10 (3d6) acid damage at the start of each of the Misstahen’s turns.

The Misstahen can have only three creatures swallowed at a time. While the Misstahen isn’t incapacitated, it can regurgitate the creature at any time (no action required) in a space within 5 feet of it. The creature exits prone. If the Misstahen dies, it likewise regurgitates a swallowed creature.

Description

“The forest can’t be trusted.” They heard the old blind barkeep spit. “Too many good folk go missin’ chasing echoes of the dead.”

Her words colored the parties tentative steps through the dreaded woods. The night cloaked the path in suffocating darkness, as the adventurers clung to the light of a single Driftglobe. They were guided by the rumors of a powerful but benevolent archfey that walked along the moonbeams. Townspeople flushed with adoration when they spoke of her godlike beauty and grace. They painted a picture of an ageless spirit with a gown and hair of feathers and a spire-like crown.

And there in the glade, she stood singing warmly against the cool night air. It was a haunting melody that enraptured the soul to walk. The fighter strode to her with reckless fervor with arms opened wide to take in her radiance.

And take she did. Coiling backward like a serpent the feather gown retracted as the spire crown opened into a sea of knives. Before a scream could even part her lips, the fighter was swallowed whole by a sweeping beak. The forest can’t be trusted, indeed.
