Description
Some of the Shadowfell's populations of giant rats, such as those who live in places that are close to the Plane of Negative Energy, have been greatly mutated by the dark energies that surround them. Umbral rats, as they are called, are far more intelligent and cunning than normal giant rats. In addition to scavenging, they hunt any prey that they view as weaker than them, gathering in eerily coordinated swarms when their prey least expects it.
