Actions
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) slashing damage plus 3 (1d6) acid damage. If the target is a Large or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape DC 13). Until this grapple ends, the ankheg can bite only the grappled creature and has advantage on attack rolls to do so.
Acid Spray (Recharge 6). The ankheg spits acid in a line that is 30 feet long and 5 feet wide, provided that it has no creature grappled. Each creature in that line must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 10 (3d6) acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Posted Jun 21, 2019Bizarre that they don't have any kind of claw attack in their description, based on their artwork.
Also this is one of a number of monstrosities that I see no reason not to call a beast. It isn't magical, a hybrid, intelligent, or alien. It's just a big burrowing bug horse, ant-lion type thing.
The only thing separating it from a beast is that it doesn't exist. But then neither do stirges; creepy buggers.

Posted Jul 16, 2019I believe the intention is that monstrosities are unnatural or magical, created by some arcane intervention.
In 3e the Ankheg is a 'magical beast', in 4e it is a 'beast' and in 5e it is a 'monstrosity'.

Posted Apr 17, 2020I like to take a moment to imagine if certain, even low CR D&D monsters like this, were real, and then I regret not having worn brown pants.

Seriously.
These guys, ogres, and giant constrictor snakes, show that CR 2 Creature is enough.

Posted Apr 30, 2020I think the reason that this monster doesn't have a claw attack stat is because its arms are made specially for digging and burrowing, so it may not be capable of packing much of a punch. Plus, unarmed strikes are a thing and if an ankheg were to use one it'd still do a significant amount of damage to a group of level one adventurers.
