Multiattack. The captain makes three melee attacks: two with its scimitar and one with its dagger. Or the captain makes two ranged attacks with its daggers.
Scimitar. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) slashing damage.
Dagger. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d4 + 3) piercing damage.
Parry. The captain adds 2 to its AC against one melee attack that would hit it. To do so, the captain must see the attacker and be wielding a melee weapon.
Description
It takes a strong personality, ruthless cunning, and a silver tongue to keep a gang of bandits in line. The bandit captain has these qualities in spades. In addition to managing a crew of selfish malcontents, the pirate captain is a variation of the bandit captain, with a ship to protect and command. To keep the crew in line, the captain must mete out rewards and punishment on a regular basis. More than treasure, a bandit captain or pirate captain craves infamy. A prisoner who appeals to the captain's vanity or ego is more likely to be treated fairly than a prisoner who does not or claims not to know anything of the captain's colorful reputation.

Posted Oct 12, 2023this guy is much scarier then the Veteran who you would think would be stronger. yet this guy beats Veterans in virtually every way.
damage per turn
Bandit Captain: 17
Veteran: 14
Defenses the bandit captain not only have higher hp, higher saving throws. but it can also use Parry which while not good it an extra option to give the stat block some actual interesting combat tactics.
the literally only major thing the bandit captain loses in is AC. which itsnt anything to special on either side.
this guy should be CR 3. veteran CR2.
this all came up of be using these are more elite soldiers and a veteran as a boss. yah, boss was stomped by the party.

Posted Jan 31, 2024So the veterans damage is only 14 if he uses the longsword one handed and doesn't make his free shortsword attack which there is no reason to do. His damage is either 16 if using the longsword two handed or 20 if dual wielding. Also 17 AC is much much better than using your reaction to increase your AC against a single attack. The 7 HP won't make much difference here. I don't know that the veteran is great at CR 3 but he's certainly on par with the bandit captain.

Posted Oct 2, 2024to be fair a veteran could be a grunt who's managed to get some experience and stay around for a while. A captain has likely been around for a while and is good enough to lead a band of criminals, whether it be highwaymen, smugglers, or pirates. These groups often elect their leaders and if they don't see someone as fit to lead will easily depose them.

Posted Jul 27, 2025I love how DiA did throw 7 bandits and 1 captain at my 4 player (all level three) party xD - but they were supposed to be level 2! I just did run a session 0 before the adventure began.
If anyone is wondering: they survived ;)
