Duergar Resilience. The duergar has advantage on saving throws against poison, spells, and illusions, as well as to resist being charmed or paralyzed.
Sunlight Sensitivity. While in sunlight, the duergar has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
Enlarge (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). For 1 minute, the duergar magically increases in size, along with anything it is wearing or carrying. While enlarged, the duergar is Large, doubles its damage dice on Strength-based weapon attacks (included in the attacks), and makes Strength checks and Strength saving throws with advantage. If the duergar lacks the room to become Large, it attains the maximum size possible in the space available.
War Pick. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage, or 11 (2d8 + 2) piercing damage while enlarged.
Javelin. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 30/120 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage, or 9 (2d6 + 2) piercing damage while enlarged.
Invisibility (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). The duergar magically turns invisible until it attacks, casts a spell, or uses its Enlarge, or until its concentration is broken, up to 1 hour (as if concentrating on a spell). Any equipment the duergar wears or carries is invisible with it.
Who told Matt how to pronounce these things? Did they just let him make it up? He's got the Duergar all wrong.
Pretty sure thats how its always been pronounced...
Wizards of the Coast gave him the actual pronunciations. But don’t feel bad, duergar aren’t real and you can pronounce them however you want in your game without fear of offending them.
Does anyone else think this Duergar should be a CR2 or higher? Decloak, enlarge, one shot several PCs...
I think its on average for CR 1. It can't attack or enlarge and stay invisible and it takes a full action for either effect.
Most other CR1 creatures either have multiattack or are hitting at it's enlarged damage every turn. I think its a fair mark
I home-brewed a version that enlarges every night, and reverts to normal during the day.
That’s amazing!!
Unless otherwise stated, assume something is an action.
By the way, this should be a CR 2 creature. Its single-shot damage is enough to remove a 1st-level character. Additionally, its Invisibility feature affords it a +3.5/3 to both its effective AC and Attack Bonus. Here are the effective values considering its abilities and traits.
Can you play them in a campaign?
From Rime of the Frostmainden, there are two accepted pronunciations.
Im going to add them into a level 14 campaign and see how my players deal with it
Wait, if it’s the case that it benefits from invisibility in that way, shouldn’t it have an effective Attack Bonus of +7 or so?
I appreciate that the extra HP is likely to account for Duergar Resistance, but why is the DPR 14 rather than 11?
The statblock is a little ambiguous. Is it meant to imply that the Duergar cannot be both enlarged and invisible at the same time?
I’ll have to check Sage Advice on the matter.
Ha lol this is why am i here too. From RoTF
Lol, he gets the info straight from WOTC so if his pronunciations are wrong then it's WOTC's fault. Besides, so many things are commonly mispronounced in D&D like Aasimars and Aarakocra so there isn't just one accepted pronunciation even if it's incorrect for so many different things
Can somebody help me out? I'm playing the Duergar subrace from the SCAG, and I'm a little confused about what it means to have advantage on saving throws against illusions. Does that mean I have advantage on saving throws against Illusion spells as well? Like, would I have advantage on my saving throw to overcome the Fear spell?
Colville pronounces this [dwar-gar]. It throws me every time.
They have traits in Mordenkainen's, so I would say yes. My only issue is they're Lawful Evil in the book.
