Spider Climb. The ettercap can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.
Web Sense. While in contact with a web, the ettercap knows the exact location of any other creature in contact with the same web.
Web Walker. The ettercap ignores movement restrictions caused by webbing.
Multiattack. The ettercap makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) poison damage. The target must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d4 + 2) slashing damage.
Web (Recharge 5–6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one Large or smaller creature. Hit: The creature is restrained by webbing. As an action, the restrained creature can make a DC 11 Strength check, escaping from the webbing on a success. The effect also ends if the webbing is destroyed. The webbing has AC 10, 5 hit points, vulnerability to fire damage, and immunity to bludgeoning, poison, and psychic damage.
This thing is crazy, I'm using it.

Spider-man, Spider-man, doing whatever a spider can
Ran a great session with these guys. Multilayered overlapping tight cavern corridors, all covered in web. Ettercaps were jumping down from ledges at the party, one even got in the centaurs saddle to strangle her. Instilled a good amount of panic in my party.
why did they not mention this varient it can use this instead of claws
Web Garrote. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one Medium or Small creature against which the ettercap has advantage on the attack roll. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 12). Until this grapple ends, the target can't breathe, and the ettercap has advantage on attack rolls against it.
The Ettercap is a nice, village boogeyman.
That is SO weird.
Ettercaps are a lot of fun to use.
I used one today with two giant wolf spiders, two giant spiders, and some traps mixed in. Made for a good session for my level one group of adventurers. Has a very close call for for them a couple of times. They came out victorious and they loved the challenge. 😊
That’s perfect. Sounds like a textbook Ettercap encounter, and its great to hear that your players enjoyed it.
Love this goofy looking bug man
Who else was in the encounter builder, saw the picture and thought it was a spider, then clicked this and realized that it looks NOTHING like a spider, yet is fine with it?
What language do they speak, if any? Or do they just chitter?
SPIDER CAP SPIDER CAP UNFRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER CAP
Amazing information! I’m going to use it similarly for my party of 6 level-1 players for my first time as DM. I think I’ll do 2 swarms of spiders to lead into the encounter and get them guessing what the boss will be!
Slap some speech onto em, make them overprotective parents, bam you have a spider mom ready to defend her children from vile adventurers trying to disturb her peaceful life.
"They lair deep in remote forests."
Needs a bit of a grammar fix, but I get it.
I don't follow, what is wrong with that sentence, grammatically?
