Posted Jul 10, 2021If it was a familiar though, it couldn't attack though.... unless it was a war lock's pact of the chain familiar.

Posted Dec 5, 2021These are cool. I found one in Undermountain and it was slick. Just get out of it's range and shoot it.

Posted Dec 20, 2021I wonder what a flying crossbow would look like, and if it'd use the same statblock. I imagine range and damage would match a regular crossbow, but I being made of wood and moving parts it'd have far fewer hitpoits.

Posted Jun 11, 2022Been working on n solo campaign for my partner and I. And I've been working with the idea of having her companion being silent and explaining that away with the old you two survived some attack or big bad that you can’t fully remember but that event scared her companion so that they never spoke again. But what if the event scared her so much that her mind created this companion when the magic flying sword came to her rescue. Like chaos magic filling a void, creating a vision of someone holding the sword. Go deeper and the visage is someone from her past.

Posted Aug 22, 2022My interpretation of the flying sword's Natural Armor calculation (for making a sidekick version) is 13 + Dex modifier + 2, like a lizardfolk using their Natural Armor and wielding a shield; this would explain why the flying sword uses the longsword's one-handed damage die instead of its versatile damage die - it has the benefit of wielding a shield, not by physically having a shield but by devoting some of the magic animating it to defensive movement rather than purely to attacking.
A hypothetical attacking-focussed flying sword would have an AC 2 lower and use a d10 as its damage die; it makes sense that this defensive version would be the default, as the attacking-focussed version seems like it would be less effective.

Posted Dec 3, 2022I do not think so. It is essentially an Animated Sword, created by magic. This has no brain, no feelings, just to follow an order: stabby stabby.
