Description
These malevolent creatures of elemental earth resemble grotesque, fiendish statues. A gargoyle lurks among masonry and ruins, delighting in the terror it creates when it breaks from its suspended pose.
Maybe, but the thing is, D&D doesn't do its research. Like, at all. Here, we rely entirely on vague, '70s-era stereotypes to inform our knowledge of other cultures.
Simply make a lawful good gargoyle. It isn't that hard to make a backstory where a gargoyle, after being beaten by some adventurers, was taken in by a monastery and reformed itself to give up cruelty and defend the monastery for the rest of its life.
Swift and kind of tough, but lacking in the damage department.
So instead of pairing them up with damage dealers, you can double down on gargoyles.
A gang of gargoyles won't put out too much damage at first, but it'll be hard to escape or put them down quickly.
Damage magic and magical weapons become more important.
Gargoyles are like a terror unit, town guards will barely be able to hurt them but adventurers can do better.
Imagine getting picked up by one of the gargoyles into the air while it is laughing manically just before it lets go and you fall 60 feet from the ground
not trying to insult you but if a dm can't describe a gargoyle without saying the word "gargoyle" then that dm needs to take some lessons in descriptive Writing lol.
just ran into a gargoyle in Tomb of Annihilation. It was awesome and me being a teifling druid was a giant spider and just crawled away. Left a member behind but nobody seemed to notice :) Then almost died again :)
