Stench. Any creature that starts its turn within 5 feet of the ghast must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the start of its next turn. On a successful saving throw, the creature is immune to the ghast's Stench for 24 hours.
Turning Defiance. The ghast and any ghouls within 30 feet of it have advantage on saving throws against effects that turn undead.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) piercing damage.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) slashing damage. If the target is a creature other than an undead, it must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Posted Jun 21, 2018Describe the following to your players to provide better immersion - (show, don't tell during their first encounter):
This foul medium creature appears more or less humanoid; but has mottled, decaying flesh drawn tight across clearly visible bones. It is mostly hairless, has a carnivore’s sharp teeth and jagged claws. Its eyes burn like hot coals in their sunken sockets.
In addition, you might want to allow them an Intelligence - Religion check to know the following (accumulated - a roll of 25 or above would know all):
DC5 (very easy): attacks with a bite or a claw
DC10 (easy): its claw attack can cause paralyzation and being next to the creature's stench may cause one to be poisoned
DC15 (medium): resistance to necrotic damage and may be difficult for a cleric to turn
DC20 (hard): attacking the creature with poison has no effect
DC25 (very hard): immune to being charmed, exhaustion, and poisoned - additionally that it has darkvision out to 60'

Posted Feb 10, 2020So question, stench, failure on the CON check means the player is poisoned. What does the poison do? Based on the my past knowledge (1st edition) I made the decision that it would cause disadvantage on "to hit/saves" until the ghast's next turn, at which point the player can attempt another save to become immune. Any thoughts?

Posted Feb 19, 2020poisoned is a condition in 5e and it does cause disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. hover over the word poisoned (notice light green underscore) to see the definition. in this case, the condition only lasts until the start of the victim's next turn.

Posted May 1, 2020Poison and poisoned are two different things. The former is a substance, the latter a condition.
Being poisoned means disadvantage on (iirc) all rolls.

Posted Sep 5, 2020Oh, it’s interesting to note: Ghasts can effect elves with its paralysis.
I think this is meant to represents greater abyssal influence overcoming the protection of the elven gods.
