Description
An ancient temple suddenly awakens, & 1 of the corrupted aasimar returns to wreak havoc upon the yokai. Will the party be able to deal w/ this unpredictable element before he tears down whatever fragile truces they've built? Or's this to be the turning point in their struggle against the yokai that finally seals the spirits’ fate? The surge of magical energy around an ancient ruin's sure to get the attention of clerics, wizards, & adventurers alike. There’s an initial rush of investigation that quickly dies away when they learn that nothing's happening. The temple seems primed, waiting for something, but no one knows what. After some time passes, an alternate translation of some of the ancient runes reveals that the temple's from the 1st age of the yokai. Finally, if this scheme plays out w/o the party getting involved, they surely hear rumors of Zaigan’s actions. The temple becomes primed to reawaken Zaigan & Shengan, a pair of corrupted aasimar brothers from the 1st war w/ the yokai. The 1st time yokai're mentioned w/i its walls (or if 1 enters the temple), Zaigan & Shengan're immediately summoned from the demiplane in which they slumber. They appear in front of the temple’s main altar & seek out the nearest authority figure & begin questioning them about the state of the war w/ the yokai. If the party's an enemy of the yokai, they're a friend of Zaigan & Shengan. If, on the other hand, they're allied w/ the yokai, the 2 aasimar attack them immediately. Though they're willing to fight to the death in battle w/ the yokai, if the party reduces either aasimar to less than half his max hit points the pair flee the temple to seek allies in their eternal struggle. Regardless of how the 1st interaction goes, after the brothers awaken the temple becomes dormant again. Should the party visit the temple accompanied by a friendly yokai, Zaigan & Shengan'll attack the yokai exclusively. They believe no humanoid would willingly work w/ them & conclude the yokai must've charmed the party. The return of the corrupted aasimar causes an awakening of more powerful yokai. Depending on how the party interacts w/ Zaigan & Shengan, it’s possible this scheme gets resolved immediately or has lasting consequences for the rest of the Kitsune’s story. Zaigan & Shengan're identical to Valtyra in ability. While her transformation was interrupted before she was fully bound in servitude, the brothers had no such saving grace. They're determined to eradicate the yokai by any means necessary & won't stop. Both're fiercely professional, & they show little emotion save for a grim satisfaction in work well done. If they encounter Valtyra, they try to kill her & can't be convinced otherwise. In their eyes she's guilty by association.
