Innate Spellcasting. The glabrezu's spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 16). The glabrezu can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
At will: darkness, detect magic, dispel magic
1/day each: confusion, fly, power word stun
Magic Resistance. The glabrezu has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Multiattack. The glabrezu makes four attacks: two with its pincers and two with its fists. Alternatively, it makes two attacks with its pincers and casts one spell.
Pincer. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape DC 15). The glabrezu has two pincers, each of which can grapple only one target.
Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d4 + 2) bludgeoning damage.
So here's a fun way to use this guy...
Start with fly - effective for 10 minutes
Next turn, Power word stun an opponent at close range (optional)...if successful, follow through with two pincer attacks...if successful the opponent is grappled. Use the movement to fly up 60 feet.
Next turn, fly up an additional 60 feet, make 4 meelee attacks, then drop the creature from 120 ft...for an additional 12d6 damage on top of the 4 meelee attacks. Assuming all are a success, this results in an average of 84 damage.
My players hate this guy.
If dragging opponent while flying, wouldn't fly speed be reduced to half? Need to check rule wording. I use dragging rules for a resisting foe, but carry weight for friends personally.
That sounds lovely! I may try this.
Well yeah, because I'm fairly certain you have to use their multiattack in the specified order they give (2 pincer attacks and THEN one spell) but hey, you do you.
Technically, in the stat block it just says "and". "Alternatively, it makes two attacks with its pincers and casts one spell". If it said, "and then", I'd agree with you, but as it is written is specifies no order in which these actions can occur.
I don't think so. It says "and", not "then". Do A and B is exactly the same as do B and A.
That's really up to you as the DM. I would personally not have it at half speed, based one the fact that it is a large creature which both means that by-the-rules it could be use as a mount, but more importantly the large size doubles its carrying capacity (doubled for each size above medium) which is already significant with a strength of 20. For the record that is a carrying capacity of 600 pounds with a drag/lift/push capacity of 1200.
Oof. The ability to cast dispel magic every turn (with a +4 mod) AND make two strong attacks every turn make this guy very frustrating for a party. Alternatively the truesight pairs well with darkness, which he can also cast a lot more often than any party can dispel. Fly, in my opinion, is really just icing on the cake so he can give anyone who thinks they can outmanuever him the fright of their life.
I love him, I'll take 10.
I noticed the you said "Next turn, Power word stun an opponent at close range (optional)" Now I must put emphasis on "optional" but still before you "said" "Next turn, Power word stun an opponent at close range (optional)" you "said" "Start with fly - effective for 10 minutes" the Glabrezu can only use one of those.
1/day each: confusion, fly, power word stun
But I must agree with your players, I would hate that guy.
They don't have devils sight.
They do have Truesight though.
I understand the "1/day each" as once per day it can cast fly, once per day it can cast confusion and so on.
Would you give this guy shape shifting?
People are in the comments coming up with clever ways to torture their players, and the first thing I thought upon seeing this was "angery crab boi."
I’d would probably give them something like a cap of disguise.
Hiding their big pinchers under a giant cape is also a classic, only let enemies see the normal man arms.
Oh and give him upside down humanish face
Didn't these guys use to have a wish ability?
I think a someone as big as this guy’s flying speed isn’t reduced when trying to drag a medium or smaller creature.
They used to, but couldn't use it for themselves. Pretty pointless if you ask me, I'm sure they can procure just about any mid level item or small gold fortune they need to tempt the players with without having to rely on God-level magic.
