Posted Dec 30, 2019In theory, you could give it a class. Aside from that, no, they don't level up.

Posted Jan 31, 2020Well, if you're a ranger or a beast master. You would probably be able to ride anything medium sized that you can have for a companion. (That would be my ruling anyway)

Posted Apr 19, 2020Yes, the ranger's Beast Master archetype specifies mastiff as a possible companion. Anything with a CR of 1/4 or lower can be a companion (PHB p93).

Posted May 18, 2020There’s actually Unearthed Arcana rules for this (the first ”Sidekick” article I believe).
If you’re trying to stick to RAW, give it an extra hit die and the features of a 1st level Fighter, when you think he needs a buff.

RAW, it can pull up to five times it’s max carrying capacity of 195 pounds.

Posted Jul 24, 2020Revised mastiff: lawful good alignment, charisma 15, skills persuasion , and maybe intimidation, since it’s a guard dog, and the feature Hungrily Adorable: the mastiff had advantage on deception checks to convince people it hasn’t been fed, and persuasion check to get fed.
I speak from experience
