Traits
False Appearance. While the shrieker remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary fungus.
Reactions
Shriek. When bright light or a creature is within 30 feet of the shrieker, it emits a shriek audible within 300 feet of it. The shrieker continues to shriek until the disturbance moves out of range and for 1d4 of the shrieker's turns afterward.

Posted Jun 22, 2018Describe the following to your players to provide better immersion - (show, don't tell during their first encounter):
This purple plant looks like a human-sized mushroom with many large blowholes which emit an audible shriek.
In addition, you might want to allow them an Intelligence - Nature check to know the following (accumulated - a roll of 25 or above would know all):
DC5 (very easy): shrieks when bright light or a creature is within 30'
DC10 (easy): shriek is audible within 300' and continues for up to 24 seconds after the disturbance moves out of range - can remain motionless and indistinguishable from an ordinary fungus
DC15 (medium): does not have any damage resistances nor damage vulnerabilities
DC20 (hard): does not have any damage immunities
DC25 (very hard): immune to being blinded, deafened and frightened - blindsight out to 30'

Posted Apr 20, 2019So if there's not bright light or a creature within 30 feet, could a person attack it from range and it would stay silent (even if more than one hit was required to take it down)?
Personally I'm going to assume that after being punctured if it's not completely destroyed in one hit, it makes a Phhbbbbtttt fart noise audible within 60 feet

Posted Apr 23, 2019I would say so. Since it only uses blindsight to perceive it's surroundings and is only startled by those specific stigma. Of course, you could always spruce it up some if you want to have some mad botanist that operated on one and changed it's properties, haha.

Posted Nov 7, 2019I really like your diagram for monster knowledge DC. What is your general structure for monster knowledge, like where would languages fall in this DC?

Posted May 27, 2020What does it mean, "when it remains motionless"? It has a speed of 0 ft. ZERO. I don't get it.

Posted May 27, 2020This is one of those things that would be great if you need something like the alarm spell but no one knows it/has it prepared. It'd be super annoying, too.

Posted May 28, 2020If it has a passive then that means it can be snuck past. Otherwise don't put that there.

Posted Jul 30, 2020Yes, but also keep in mind that it is not relying on sight alone, it feels vibrations (blindsight). Also, they are commonly grouped together, so you will likely need to successfully pass several of them. A single one should be easy for any skilled sneak to get past.

Posted Sep 4, 2020What do you all think about how the shrieker perceives "a disturbance," given the blindsight and passive perception of 6? Obviously it would "see" someone moving past it without cover, no matter how sneaky they were, but what about...
-sneaking behind cover
-sneaking while camouflaged or invisible
-sneaking in a form that doesn't disturb the air (as a mist or something)
Since this might come up in my game tonight, I think I'm going to rule that if the shrieker doesn't have line of sight to a stealthy "disturbance," it won't shriek. But curious what you think.

Posted Sep 20, 2020It has tremor not blind. So it sees things regardless as long as they are moving.
when they move away they stop. So you can rule it that way, but you shouldn't.

Posted Apr 21, 2021Partial cover: No effect on its Perception checks.
Full cover: No effect on its Perception checks.
Invisible: No effect on its Perception checks.
Misty form: No effect on its Perception checks.
Silence: No effect on its Perception checks.
But it's only a DC 6. As long as you're not trying to Stealth multiple -X clankypants past it, you might be OK?
Maybe it's been edited? Look again, it's got full-on Blindsight, not Tremorsense or Blindsense.

Posted Jun 30, 2021To those saying if it doesn't see, it doesnt shriek, that would be incorrect(in RAW, as a DM, do whatever the heck you want) Its shriek feature says "when (triggers) is within 30 feet" if they had to notice it, it would say "when (triggers) it can see are within 30 feet"

Posted Nov 15, 2021My party just summoned these with the bag of beans item and now there’s just a bunch of shriekers close by the capital city.
it’s great, we’re adding lore to the world by being a nuisance and it’s everyone’s problem.
