Traits

Aura of the Guardian. Yael and all allied creatures within 30ft gain a +5 to all saving throws and cannot be frightened.

Emissary of Redemption. Yael regains 10hp at the start of her turn, and has resistance to all damage dealt by creatures she has not cast a spell or dealt damage to in combat. In addition, these creatures receive half the damage dealt to Yael in radiant damage.

Incorporeal Movement. Yael can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. She takes 5 (1d10) force damage if she ends its turn inside an object.

Spellcasting. Yael is a 20th-level spellcaster. Her spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 18, +10 to hit with spell attacks). Yael has following Paladin spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): light, sacred flametoll the dead

1st level (4 slots):  cure woundsguiding boltsanctuary, sleep

2nd level (3 slots): lesser restorationcalm emotionshold person

3rd level (3 slots):  dispel magicrevivifyhypnotic pattern

4th level (3 slots):  resilient spherestoneskindeath ward

Actions

Multiattack. Yael makes three melee attacks, or two ranged attacks.

Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit:  9 (1d10 + 3) slashing damage plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage.

Recurve Bow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 120/480 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage.

Lay on Hands (3/day). Yael lays her hands on a creature, restoring 30 hit points to them, and curing any diseases or poisons afflicting them.

Bonus Actions

Spellcasting. Yael may use her bonus action to cast sanctuary with her spellcasting feature.

Reactions

Protector. When a creature other than Yael within 30ft is hit by an attack, Yael can magically transfer some of that damage to herself using her reaction. This damage cannot be reduced in any way.

Rebuke the Violent (1/rest). When a creature within 30ft of Yael deals damage to a creature other than herself, as a reaction Yael may force that creature to make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the attacker takes radiant damage equal to the damage it just dealt. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage.

Description

SPOILER WARNING: Major Descent Into Avernus Plot Spoilers Ahead!

Yael, once a great general of Elturel, fled the frontline of the Hellrider's battle for the Nine Hells entrusted with the Sword of Zariel and accompanied by her trusty friend and companion Lulu. Now, many years later, her spirit lives on as the guardian of that sword in a fortress known as the Bleeding Citadel.

This statblock is meant to represent Yael as the ghost of a 20th level redemption paladin, with some additional abilities granted by the Sword of Zariel. I recommend using it in an encounter where hordes of Yeenoghu's forces rush towards the gate of the Bleeding Citadel as it is opened, perhaps lead by a Flind and a pair of Gnoll Pack Lords. Alternatively, she may show up via divine intervention, or used as some other celestial spirit in campaigns other than Descent into Avernus.
