Amphibious. The dragon can breathe both air and water.
Purify (1/Day). The dragon can cast aura of purity, requiring no spell components and using Intelligence as the spellcasting ability.
Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Multiattack. The dragon makes one Bite attack and two Claw attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d10 + 4) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6) radiant damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) slashing damage.
Soul Rending Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales greenish radiant energy in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 17 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 35 (10d6) radiant damage and is weakened until the end of its next turn. A weakened creature has disadvantage on intelligence-based ability checks and Intelligence saving throws. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and isn’t weakened.
Spellcasting (Psionics). The dragon casts one of the following spells, requiring no spell components and using Intelligence as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 17):
1/day each: fortune's favor, magic circle, distort value
Change Shape. The dragon magically transforms into any creature that is Medium or Small, while retaining its game statistics (other than its size). This transformation ends if the dragon is reduced to 0 hit points or uses a bonus action to end it.
Psychic Step. The dragon magically teleports to an unoccupied space it can see within 60 feet of it.
The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Claw. The dragon makes one Claw attack.
Psionics (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon uses Psychic Step or Spellcasting.
Illuminating Discharge(Costs 3 Actions). The dragon targets a creature or an object not being worn or carried that it can see within 60 feet of it. The target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or take 28 (8d6) radiant damage. If a creature takes damage from this effect, it becomes blinded until the start of the dragon's next turn.
Description
Citrine dragons, also known as Pyrite dragons, are often confused with gold and topaz dragons from a distance or a glance, or even red dragons if flying high overhead.
Gleaming Gold
Upon hatching, a Citrine dragon wyrmling's scales are dull yellow-orange and have a cloudy or filmy look. As they age, their scales harden and clarify, becoming translucent and faceted, and ranging from pale yellow to brown. in color. Their bodies are akin to that of a gold combined with that of a red dragon, allowing them to propel them through both air and water, with red eyes that somehow give a feeling of wisdom, comfort, and love, rather than any sort of hate or aggression.
Embodiment of Positivity
Generally not malicious, Citrine dragons embody positivity. They view peace and happiness as the true goal of all things in life, to this end Citrine dragons will use their powers to aid in the creation and improvement of new growth and construction. Thanks to the radiant energy of the Positive Plane that suffuses them. Their psionic power manifests the fundamental principle of life-giving energy that mortal beings are rejuvenated and healed by, the dragons’ demeanor is typically wholesome and calm as a result.
Being competent swimmers and making their lairs on seacoasts and in brackish marshes, love the water. Their favorite food is giant squid, so these dragons have ample opportunity to complain bitterly about being wet after diving deep into the ocean in search of prey.
Citrine dragons often are willing to aid druids and other nature protectors who preserve and restore large swaths of countryside. Beyond that, Citrine dragons like company but can grow irritated when if one's behavior proves toxic and or self-destructive. But anyone who can appreciate their kindness and preference to not get involved or cause harm except as a last resort, can form a lasting bond with a powerful ally.
Tranquil Hoards
Citrine dragons prize information on creation, whether abstract or dedicated to practical applications. They are fascinated by magic that creates objects from nothing, brings happiness, peace, serenity, and stability to both things and beings. And they are particularly intrigued by symbols of love, sometimes keeping them in their hoards as curios.
Citrine Dragon Lairs
Citrine dragons are happiest by the sea. They spend most of their time basking in the sun and have don't mind getting wet. They love being able to see the water, so they build their lairs on the heights of seaside cliffs or near perfect sunbathing beaches where they can best accomplish this.
Their preference for lair sites frequently brings Citrine dragons into conflict with other creatures, since they resent having to fight when not necessary, their chosen scenic locations are often shared with other creatures, the dragon negotiating for them to have their own secluded section of the area to use for it's lair. Citrine dragons decorate their lairs with mirrors to make them look bigger and brighter, as well as fabric and objects in golden shades that complement their scales. They obsessively organize their hoards regardless of if they ever show them to anyone else or not.
Citrine Dragon Lair Features
The Citrine dragon lair for this example is situated among the rocky cliffs and beaches of a rugged coastline. The lair is set in a cavern complex near the top of the cliffs, 50 feet above the sandy beaches, outcroppings, and islands below. It has the following features:
Outcropping. A flat outcropping with sheer limestone sides, mostly bare, offers a comfortable spot where the dragon can bask in the sunlight and watch the waves below.
Entry Tunnel. A long tunnel leads from the outcropping to the heart of the lair.
Decorated Caverns. The walls of the lair are mostly still in their natural state but are hung with the dragon’s collection of nautical paintings, mirrors, and sun-colored tapestries. Numerous gold-and-glass hanging lanterns are suspended from the ceiling, giving the place a warm, cozy glow. (The lanterns might be magical or maintained by minions.) The floors are covered with plush sand-colored carpets.
Hoard Chamber. A small chamber in the upper left corner of the map contains the dragon’s hoard. The area is decorated in a similar fashion to the main chamber, and its collected jewels and gold are painstakingly organized and tucked into chests stacked on gold-chased shelves.
Clifftop Path. A second exit from the cave allows the dragon quick access to the lair and leads to a narrow path bordered on the right by a sheer 50-foot drop and on the left by a cliff wall just as steep and devoid of hand- or footholds. The dragon has festooned this path with tripwire alarms and minor booby traps.
Islands. Three small islands jut from the water below the outcropping. The largest features cliffs that rise steeply to a plateau 40 feet above sea level. The dragon sometimes basks here as well and takes many meals atop the plateau.
Lair and Lair Actions
A Citrine Dragon’s Lair
Citrine dragons dwell where the sea meets the land, favoring sites where life is abundant and peaceful. They make their lairs in caves set into sea cliffs, or beneath salt marshes where fresh water and sea water mingle, constantly balancing their love of water to use flooded tunnels as secure entrances into their homes while keeping the ecosystem balanced for all that live in it.
The challenge rating of a legendary Citrine dragon increases by 1 when it’s encountered in its lair.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon can take one of the following lair actions; the dragon can’t take the same lair action two rounds in a row:
Beguiling Whisper. The dragon telepathically whispers to one creature within range of the dragon’s telepathy. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by the dragon until initiative count 20 on the next round. A creature charmed in this way obeys to the best of its ability any command the dragon issues that isn’t directly harmful to the creature.
Cancellation. The dragon chooses an active spell of 5th level or lower that it’s aware of in the lair and ends the spell.
Positive Energy Infusion. Up to two creatures the dragon can see within the lair must each succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 14 (4d6) radiant damage. Positive energy then infuses the lair until initiative count 20 on the next round. While the infusion lasts, creatures in the lair other than the dragon have disadvantages on attack rolls.
Regional Effects
The region surrounding a legendary Citrine dragon’s lair is altered by the dragon’s magic, creating one or more of the following effects:
Crystal Profusion. Natural stone within 6 miles of the lair grows plentiful crystal formations and veins of citrine gemstones, particularly underground.
Pleasant Weather. The weather within 6 miles of the dragon’s lair is always sunny and pleasantly warm during the day. Rain falls only at night, and dew waters the ground in the early morning.
Sweet Water. Any water within 6 miles of the lair is supernaturally pure. It tastes mildly sweet, and if added to any other liquid, it changes an equal volume of that liquid into pure, drinkable water. This neutralizes poisons and turns contaminated water into fresh water, if that water is salt water, it remains salt water, but the levels is magically infused with the dragon's energies to where if drank it is no different than fresh water.
Watery Sight. Water within 6 miles of the lair is a conduit for the dragon’s psionic presence. As an action, the dragon can cast the clairvoyance spell, requiring no spell components and targeting any body of water in that region.
If the dragon dies, the population of giant squid in the region returns to normal levels over the course of 1d10 days. The existing abundance of crystals and Citrine remains, but new ones form at a normal rate.
