Traits

Master of the Undead. If this Undead Overlord would take damage from a melee attack, and it is within 10ft of an undead creature, that undead creature takes the damage instead. In addition, undead creatures may not take attack actions or cast spells on an Undead Overlord

Spellcasting. The Undead Overlord is not a spellcaster, however, it may cast ‘Summon Undead’, up to 3 times a day, with no material components required. In addition, the creature summoned does not disappear when the spell ends, only if the Undead Overlord that summoned it banishes it or is killed, or if that creature’s hit points drop to 0, in accordance with the spell

Actions

Multiattack. The Undead Overlord makes up to 2 attacks with its Necromantic Staff and Necromantic Blast, in any combination

Necromantic Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) bludgeoning damage. If the target is not undead, it takes an additional 7 (2d4 + 2) necrotic damage

Necromantic Blast. RangedWeapon Attack: +6 to hit, range 10/100 ft., three targets. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) necrotic damage.

Life Drain. The Undead Overlord picks a target within 30ft of it. The target must succeed a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw, taking 27 (4d10 + 9) damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. The Undead Overlord then heals a number of hit points equal to the damage taken by the target.

Description

Undead Overlords are mysterious and almost ethereal beings, who have committed such atrocities as to command great power over the undead. They are often bitter and resentful, holding grudges for up to millennia. Though not spellcasters themselves, necromantic energy courses through their veins, and they can command vast swathes of the undead at a time- many even disappear for years, only to reappear with an army of the undead to crush their much hated foes. Their plans are complex and few truly understand them until it is far too late to stop them.

Lair and Lair Actions

A Undead Overlord tends to reside in an ancient castle in the Underdark, in which it hides many traps, and often contains dark experiments, or rooms full of undead warriors

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Undead Overlord takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Undead Overlord can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • The Undead Overlord casts the ‘Summon Undead’ spell 3 times in accordance with its spellcasting ability
  • The Undead Overlord heals 2d8 hit points
  • The Undead Overlord can teleport to any other room in its lair
