Traits

Amphibious: The Abyssal Devourer can breathe air and water.

Tentacle Aura: Any creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of the Abyssal Devourer must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be grappled (escape DC 16). Until this grapple ends, the creature is restrained, and the Abyssal Devourer can automatically hit the creature with its tentacle attack.

Actions

Multiattack: The Abyssal Devourer makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its tentacle.

Bite: Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d6 + 5) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.

Tentacle: Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d6 + 5) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16). The Abyssal Devourer can grapple up to two creatures at once.

Whirlpool (Recharge 5-6): The Abyssal Devourer creates a 20-foot radius, 30-foot-high cylinder of swirling water centered on itself. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Strength saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 18 (4d8) bludgeoning damage and is flung up to 15 feet away from the Abyssal Devourer and knocked prone. On a success, a creature takes half the bludgeoning damage and isn’t flung away or knocked prone.

Reactions

Tentacle Snap: When a creature within 15 feet of the Abyssal Devourer attempts to move away without using the Disengage action, the Abyssal Devourer can make a tentacle attack against that creature. (replaces attack of opportunity)

Legendary Actions

The Abyssal Devourer can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Abyssal Devourer regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Tentacle Attack: The Abyssal Devourer makes one tentacle attack.
  • Move: The Abyssal Devourer moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Description

Appearance: The Abyssal Devourer is a nightmarish creature from the darkest depths of the ocean. It has a serpentine body covered in thick, rubbery scales that shimmer with an otherworldly bioluminescence. Its most terrifying features are its enormous, gaping maw filled with rows of needle-like teeth and its multiple long, sinuous tentacles that writhe menacingly around it. The creature's eyes glow with an eerie blue light, giving it a malevolent and alien appearance.

Behavior: The Abyssal Devourer is an apex predator, lurking in the deep waters. It is highly territorial and will aggressively attack any intruders that enter its domain. The creature is intelligent and cunning, using its environment to its advantage in combat. It prefers to ambush its prey, using its tentacle aura to ensnare victims and drag them into the water to drown them.

Habitat: This monstrous aberration dwells in the darkest parts of the ocean, often near underwater caves or ancient ruins where it can find ample prey. The Abyssal Devourer is rarely seen by surface dwellers, as it tends to stay in deep, isolated locations. However, its presence can sometimes be detected by the eerie glow of its bioluminescent scales or the churning waters it leaves in its wake.

Abilities:

  • Amphibious Nature: The Abyssal Devourer can breathe both air and water, allowing it to hunt both underwater and on the surface.
  • Tentacle Aura: This natural ability allows it to grapple and restrain multiple foes at once, making it a formidable opponent in close combat.
  • Whirlpool: The creature can create a powerful whirlpool, disorienting and damaging its enemies, often dragging them deeper into the water where it has the advantage.

Lore: Legends speak of the Abyssal Devourer as an ancient guardian of forgotten secrets and cursed treasures hidden in the depths. Some sailors believe that encountering this creature is a sign of impending doom, while others think it guards the entrance to a lost underwater civilization. The origins of the Abyssal Devourer are shrouded in mystery, but its fearsome reputation is well known among those who venture into the ocean's depths.
