Traits
Pack Tactics. The lion has Advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the lion’s allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally doesn’t have the Incapacitated condition.
Running Leap. With a 10-foot running start, the lion can Long Jump up to 25 feet.
Actions
Multiattack. The lion makes two Rend attacks. It can replace one attack with a use of Roar.
Rend. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) Slashing damage.
Roar. Wisdom Saving Throw: DC 11, one creature within 15 feet. Failure: The target has the Frightened condition until the start of the lion’s next turn.
This appears to be the best 2024 wildshape combat option. Pack tactics + average 15 damage (1d8 + 3 is 7.5 average) thanks to multiattack is very nice. Roar is cool, too. New Dire Wolf has auto-prone on hit but only one attack, and Brown Bear's damage is similar to this, but lacks pack tactics for the consistent advantage.
Because why put in the miniscule effort of specifying what kind of attack the monster is making when you can just say " Rend" for every melee attack and " Arcane Burst" for every spell attack. They say " Simplify" & "Streamline" which..yeah it sounds better then lazy. The idea that having different attacks is " Too Complicated" for DM's to keep track of is mildly offensive, and just makes the game less diverse
It's absurd that they nerfed both Panther and Tiger by removing their prowl ability (disengage, movement, and hide for free after making a singular attack) and left lion alone. With pack tactics and multi-attack, this out-damages most CR 2 beasts and some CR 3.
It seems to me that the lion's Roar DC should be recalculated since your using the Druid's Wisdom and PB bonus.
Thus, a 20 Wisdom Druid, level 7, would have a Roar DC of 8+3+5 = 16
That is a Base of 8 plus a PB of +3 plus a Wisdom Bonus of +5.
WHY?
Under Wild Shape
Game Statistics. Your game statistics are replaced by the Beast’s stat block, but you retain your creature type; Hit Points; Hit Point Dice; Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores; class features; languages; and feats. You also retain your skill and saving throw proficiencies and use your Proficiency Bonus for them, in addition to gaining the proficiencies of the creature. If a skill or saving throw modifier in the Beast’s stat block is higher than yours, use the one in the stat block.
Admittedly, you are only supposed to use the higher skill (if the Beast's is higher than yours and perhaps not the reverse).
This might not be RAW but I wonder why it should not be RAW or at least RAI.
I think the only problem with your Wild Shape Roar calculation is the Proficiency Bonus.
Wild Shape states that "You also retain your skill and saving throw proficiencies and use your Proficiency Bonus for them, in addition to gaining the proficiencies of the creature" which is saying you only use your own Proficiency Bonus for Skills and Saving Throws (not attacks or Save DC). Do I subjectively disagree with this ruling: yes, but it is technically what is written, and ignoring it leads to much larger differences in Wild Shape overall (and that's topic for another day). The Lion's Proficiency Bonus is stated as +2, so even using a maxed out WIS Druid means the calculation is 8+2+5 = 15 (still much better!)
Secondly, while I love the idea of making this change for the Lion's Roar ability (we all know the Wild Shape Save DCs need them), it may be a dangerous habit to get into since it is really only possible to do this for the Lion because we can know to assign the WIS score as part of the Save DC calculation because no other stats share the same number. If there was another Beast that has matching stats, there isn't a way to confirm which could cause issues between players and DMs (I don't this is a case with any other 2024 MM Beasts, but is worth keeping in mind).
I get what you are saying but in this case I think I appreciate the streamlining. As a GM, you have the ability to reflavor it as you see fit.
Does running Leap actually add 25' to the lion's normal movement of 50' for a total of 75' ? This is not the case for player characters I believe so its a little unclear to me what the RAI here is. I have seen a popular builds channel (D4) where he suggests that is the case. Thoughts?
