Multiattack. The death dog makes two Bite attacks.
Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +4, reach 5 ft. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) Piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it is subjected to the following effect. Constitution Saving Throw: DC 12. First Failure: The target has the Poisoned condition. While Poisoned, the target’s Hit Point maximum doesn’t return to normal when finishing a Long Rest, and it repeats the save every 24 hours that elapse, ending the effect on itself on a success. Subsequent Failures: The Poisoned target’s Hit Point maximum decreases by 5 (1d10).
Who's a
goodneutral evil boy?Am I reading this right? After a creature is poisoned, the dog's bite damage becomes 1d4+2 and the poisoned target's hit point maximum is reduced by 1d10 each time they fail the save? I feel like that's going to make tracking actual HP a bit of a beast.
One of the few monsters where i prefer the old artwork. This one is still nice but the old one is scarier.
For stats, it got a lot of condition immunities instead of advantage for saves.
It does 1 dmg less for the attack. Otherwise it dust change, just different wording.
So overall ok changes
I don't think you are. The bite is always 1d4+2 (or 4 average) damage. The first Con save failure gives the poisoned condition, and additionally means they don't get HP max back after a long rest UNTIL they make an additional save that they can only make every 24 hours. If you fail that save, THOSE failures remove 1d10 HP MAX.
Lore wise this was a disease that caused flesh to rot off the bone and the write up makes a LOT more sense : https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16838-death-dog?srsltid=AfmBOopeUonqM1gMV-Zl-tfjyvVqTJJE8Z52QHDHlUKcDPvb0aRNhMeG
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw against disease or become poisoned until the disease is cured. Every 24 hours that elapse, the creature must repeat the saving throw, reducing its hit point maximum by 5 (1d10) on a failure. This reduction lasts until the disease is cured. The creature dies if the disease reduces its hit point maximum to 0.
