Celestial Weapons. The angel’s weapon attacks are magical. Whenever the angel hits a target with a weapon attack, the weapon deals an extra 4d8 radiant damage (included in attack). The angel may use its Charisma modifier for its weapon attack and damage rolls however, it must use the same attribute for both.
Divine Awareness. The angel knows if it hears a lie, and has advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks.
True Form. The angel can choose to magically conceal its divine nature so that it cannot be detected by magic such as the detect evil and good spell or a Paladin's Divine Sense. When the angel conceals its true form, it takes the form a medium humanoid, its statistics other than its speed and AC remain unchanged. The angel’s true form is revealed when it chooses to reveal itself, or when its hit points are reduced to 0 while in its concealed (humanoid) form. When the angel’s true form is revealed, its Angelic Armor ( +2 Plate), and Sword of Heaven ( +2 Greatsword) are magically summoned to it and equipped (included in statistics); both items are crafted from mithral and radiant-gold, and cannot lose their magical properties by any means other than destruction.
Cleansing Truth (1/day). When the angel’s true form is revealed, it immediately regains hit points equal to half of its hit point maximum, and gains the secondary benefits of its Healing Touch feature.
Sentinel Sword. Whenever the angel is in a space within 5 ft of its sword while it is animated (see Sword of Heaven), all weapon attacks made against the angel have disadvantage. If an attack is prevented by this feature, and the attack falls short of the angel’s AC by a margin of 1 or 2; the attacker rolls damage as if the attack was successful, but as if the attack was being made against an object. The sword then takes damage equal to the damage rolled, subject to the sword’s characteristics.
Innate Spellcasting. The angel’s spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 19, +11 attack bonus). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring only verbal components:
At will: detect evil and good, invisibility (self only), sacred flame (*3d8 radiant damage), shield of faith.
3/day each: call lightning, dispel magic, mass healing word.
2/day each: death ward, fire shield, staggering smite (*radiant damage).
1/day each: flame strike, dispel evil and good, raise dead.
Magic Fortitude. The angel has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects, and it cannot be put to sleep by any means other than a wish spell.
Heavenly Throes. If the angel is reduced to 0 hit points while in its True Form, the angel is destroyed and its body erupts in a blinding flash of searing light. Each creature within 30 feet of the angel must make a DC 19 Constitution save, taking 24 (7d6) radiant damage on a failed save and only half as much damage on a successful save. Creatures that fail the save by 5 or more are blinded for 1 minute. When this occurs, the angel’s summoned armor and sword are destroyed along with it.
Multiattack. The angel makes one attack while in its humanoid form or two attacks in its true form; one of the angel’s true form attacks may be replaced with sacred flame.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage. Instead of dealing damage, the angel can grapple the target (Escape DC 22).
Mace. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage.
Sword (True Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d6 + 8) slashing damage, plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage. The angel cannot use this attack while its sword is animate.
Healing Touch (4/Day). The angel touches another creature (humanoid form only); or targets a creature it can see within 30 feet (true form only). The target magically regains 34 (6d8 + 6) hit points and is freed from any curse, disease, poison, blindness, or deafness.
Sword of Heaven (True Form only). The angel releases its held sword, which hovers in-place in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the angel. The sword becomes animate and acts immediately, following the angel’s mental commands; while the sword is within 100 feet of the angel, the angel can command the sword to fly up to 50 feet and make one (flying sword) attack against a target the angel can see. The angel may use a bonus action on its turn to command the sword, including the bonus action used in which the sword becomes animate. Regardless of the distance between them, the sword instantly “blinks” to the angel’s hand if commanded to do so (no sight required) and then ceases to be animate. At the start of the angel’s turn, if its sword is animate and more than 100 ft away, the sword moves up to 50 ft toward the angel, flying if it can; or teleporting if unable to do so (ending its movement in an unoccupied space). If no unoccupied spaces are available for the sword to move to, it hovers in place and takes the Dodge action, the sword vanishes after 1 hour if it isn’t called by the angel or if the sword cannot reach the angel otherwise. While animated in this way the sword has an AC of 22, 90 hit points, immunity to radiant damage and it ignores the first ten points of bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage it takes from any source (minimum of 0). If the sword is reduced to 0 hit points while it is animated in this way, it is destroyed and the angel must complete a prayer-ritual which takes 8 hours to complete before it can create a new one.
Flying Sword (Sword of Heaven). Ranged Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d6 + 8) slashing damage plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage.
Radiant Reposte (True Form Only). When the angel takes damage from a melee attack, it can use its reaction to make one melee weapon attack against the attacker. Alternatively, if the angel takes damage while its Sword of Heaven is in a space adjacent to both the angel and the source of the damage (the attacker); the angel can use its reaction to command its sword to make one attack against the attacker with Advantage.
While in its True Form, the angel can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below, and only at the end of another creature's turn. The angel regains its spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Smite. The angel makes one weapon attack; or commands its sword of heaven to make one flying sword attack.
Heavenly Step. The angel magically teleports to an unoccupied space it can see within 50 feet.
Burning Gaze. The angel targets one creature it can see within 30 feet. If the target can see the angel, the target must succeed on a DC 19 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the target takes 18 (4d8) radiant damage and is set on fire. While it is on fire, a creature takes 9 (2d8) radiant damage at the start of each of its turns, any equipment the creature is wearing or carrying are unharmed by the radiant flames. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. If the target succeeds on its initial saving throw, it takes only half as much radiant damage and is not set on fire. Once used, the angel cannot use this lair action again until the start of its next turn.
Description
No creature in Barovia is older than the master of the Abbey of Saint Markovia in Krezk. This nameless holy figure, whom others call the Abbot, was drawn to the abbey after Saint Markovia died by Strahd’s hand. He sought to restore the abbey after it fell to corruption, but ultimately was corrupted himself.
Celestial Nature. The angel does not require air, sleep, food or drink.
Angel in Disguise. The Abbot in truth is an angel bearing the name Zaqiel, that has lived for millennia. The angel typically assumes the form of a sternly handsome human priest in his early thirties and carries himself in a gentle but noble manner. More than a hundred years ago, Zaqiel descended from the Upper Planes to honor the legacy of Saint Markovia. Taking pitty on the peoples of Barovia, he reopened the abbey in the guise of a devout, faith-empowered priest and began tending to the physically and mentally ill; even performing miracles when necessary. In so doing, the angel hoped to bring some much-needed light to Barovia. His efforts did work for a time, but then the Dark Powers began to corrupt him.
Imperfections. Zaqiel’s fall from grace started when the Belviews — a pair of murderous, desperate brothers — came to the abbey seeking harbor and salvation. The brothers bore injuries they claimed to be the work of wolves however, Zaqiel was not fooled and still, he took the brothers in. So grievous were the brothers injuries, that each would lose a part of themselves if they were both to survive. The Abbot (Zaqiel) quickly went to work, and though the brothers were grateful to be alive, they feared whatever judgment waited for them beyond the abbeys walls. The brothers begged the Abbot to let them stay. Zaqiel pitied them, knowing that in fact, what the brothers feared was justice. The Abbot, believing that he could redeem the dark hearted Belviews, took them in; provided that they spend their days serving as stewards of the abbey. The brothers agreed, and slowly, the days turned into weeks, the weeks turned into months and the months then turned into years. In all of that time, others would arrive at the abbey’s steps, each in need of a savior; and the Abbot would take them all.
Enter Vasili von Holtz. One day, a Barovian lord named Vasili von Holtz visited the abbey. The Abbot knew at once that the man was evil, but von Holtz stressed that he only wanted to help. He furnished the Abbot with forbidden lore plucked from the Amber Temple, and helped the Abbot make the Belview brothers whole again .. “with flesh collected from the dead, the living could be preserved indefinitely”. Only then did von Holtz reveal himself to be Strahd von Zarovich. The angel was intrigued that a creature such as Strahd would help him as he did; the two of them immortal enemies, now seemingly aligned in the interests of preserving mortal life. The Abbot would reflect on this new form of enlightenment, and he would fall even further into darkness.
Bride of Strahd. Strahd confided in the Abbot, lamenting his curse and telling the angel that he wished nothing more than to escape Barovia with his true love. His performance garnered the angel’s sympathy, and the Abbot, playing into Strahd’s hands, set for himself the goal of finding a cure for Strahd’s “malady.” The Abbot was now convinced that the cure lies in reuniting Strahd with his lost love and, in so doing, ending Barovia’s curse. Using the knowledge gifted to him by Strahd, the Abbot began the tireless work of building the perfect bride, to house the perfect soul. The art of flesh-crafting is not one learned quickly, and though the Abbot was naturally gifted, perfection would require practice. Those that had come to the abbey would be offered a choice if they were to remain; give to the Abbey a pound of flesh as penance for your sins attoned, or return to the world as you came hopeless and alone. Many seeking atonement have made the Abbey their home, and have gladly paid the price for their redemption; the flesh they provide, allows the Abbot to continue his holy work. Recently the Abbot has completed work on a flesh golem made predominantly from the body parts of dead women; more specifically the remains of Tatyana’s past incarnations. While the abbey itself continues to function with the help of its new clergy, the Abbot spends much of his time giving his “perfect” creation lessons in etiquette and ladylike conduct so that “she” can be formally presented to Strahd and win his love.
Strahd has no interest in a flesh golem bride, and he is too uncaring to ascertain the extent of the Abbots plans; but he finds joy in corrupting the once angelic being and looks forward to driving Zaqiel to commit further acts of depravity.
The Abbot’s Traits
Ideal. “I want to rid Barovia of its sickness. By giving the devil his true-heart’s desire, I will bring salvation to him and his land.”
Bond. “I love the clergy I have fostered and the creations they help me bring to life, especially my beautiful golems.”
Flaw. “I cannot be corrupted. My heart is pure, my intentions noble and good.”
