Traits

Charge. If the Checkout moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a ram attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 3 (1d6) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Heavy Base. The Checkout has advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws made against effects that would knock it prone.

Concerted Attack. If at least three Self Scan Checkouts flank the same character, then they all act in unison against that character - all attacks are made with Advantage, and bludgeoning damage is increased to 2d4 + 4.

Actions

Ram. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (2d4 + 2) bludgeoning damage.

Coin Assault. Ranged Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 20 ft/60 ft, one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) bludgeoning damage.

Reactions

The Self Scan Checkout is usually discovered in an inert state. If it senses movement within 10' however, it will begin to wake. The lights and screen will glow, and it will attempt to welcome the new arrival and encourage them to feed it with coins. Other Self Scan Checkouts nearby will also wake, until they are all clamouring for attention.

If nobody reacts to their calls, the Checkouts will begin to move towards their prey. They move at 5' for the first round, 10' for the second, and so on until they reach full speed.

Description

Some say the Self Scan Checkout was the creation of a warped sorcerer who cursed a shopkeeper who wronged her. Others claim that the Self Scan Checkout was the result of an unnatural pact between a merchant artificer and an ambitious lesser demon. Whatever the truth may be - and that is long vanished into the mists of time - the Self Scan Checkout is a strange and disturbing urban blight.

Adventurers will usually discover a bank of Checkouts in a dusty corner of an abandoned shop, or in the back of a warehouse or a market, dormant until they register movement nearby. They will demand goods to be placed on their broad scales, and then to be fed with coins. If attacked, or ignored, they will retaliate by ramming their assailants, and by pelting them with coins from their innards (effective as sling ammunition). Their need for money is almost inexhaustible, though some scholars have theorized that the Checkouts can be jammed if they are overfed.

And what becomes of the poor victims of the Self Scan Checkouts? Their empty purses litter the lairs of the Checkouts, but the victims themselves are never seen again. It is rumoured that coins are not the only food that the Checkouts eat...

Lair and Lair Actions

The Self Scan Checkout is rarely found far from its lair. The devices find safety in packs of between 4-8, although very rarely, in extremely large cities, they may be encountered in packs as large as 16. When encountered within their lair, the Checkouts will attempt to encircle a victim, pushing and ramming it until they can divest it of all coinage it carries. If the unfortunate victim has no money, or it has been cleaned out, the Checkouts will still continue to bludgeon it until it falls to the floor.

Checkout lairs are frequently abandoned shops or dusty corners of markets. The lairs are covered in the empty purses of their victims.
