Spellcasting:
The Xolocan (Bone Weaver) is a 4th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 14, +6 to hit with spell attacks). The Xolocan has the following Druid spells prepared:
- Cantrips (at will): Toll the Dead, Druidcraft
- 1st level (4 slots): Entangle, Cure Wounds
- 2nd level (3 slots): Spider Climb, Misty Step
Bone Strike (Melee Attack)
Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., 1 target.
Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage.
- The Xolocan lashes out with one of its long, bone-laden limbs, striking the target with the force of its skeletal structure.
Bone Volley (Ranged Attack)
Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 20/60 ft., 1 target.
Hit: 8 (1d10 + 3) piercing damage.
- The Xolocan hurls sharpened bone projectiles from its body at a target, launching them with deadly accuracy.
The Xolocan (Bone Weaver) can use a Bonus Action to surge the power of its bones, allowing its skeletal body to shift and grow bone-like armor. This grants the Xolocan temporary hit points equal to 1d6 + its Wisdom modifier. These temporary hit points last for 1 minute or until they are depleted.
- Effect: The Xolocan summons bone armor around its body, adding a layer of defense that can absorb incoming damage for a short time. This ability can be used once per short or long rest.
Bone Lash (Bonus Action)
As a Bonus Action, the Xolocan can lash out with one of its elongated, bone-laden limbs to deal 1d6 + 3 piercing damage to a target within 10 feet. This attack counts as a melee weapon attack and can be used to strike enemies in close range when it can't get a full attack off.
- Effect: The Xolocan uses its bone limb to strike in close combat, quickly delivering damage in between regular attacks.
Explanation of the Bonus Actions:
-
Bone Surge: This bonus action lets the Xolocan enhance its defenses momentarily by using its bone-weaving abilities, which fits with its nature of being a guardian of tombs or cursed places. It can create temporary hit points to absorb some damage before its next turn.
-
Bone Lash: This action represents the Xolocan's swift, aggressive nature. Using its long, skeletal limbs, it can quickly lash out at enemies in melee range when it might not be able to make a full attack.
Bone Shield (Reaction)
When a creature the Xolocan can see within 30 feet is hit by an attack, the Xolocan can use its Reaction to summon a shield of interwoven bone that deflects part of the blow.
-
Effect: The Xolocan adds a bonus of +2 to AC for the creature being attacked, potentially causing the attack to miss or reduce the damage dealt. The shield lasts until the start of the Xolocan's next turn.
-
Limitations: This ability can only be used once per round.
Bone Lash (Reaction)
When a creature within 10 feet of the Xolocan makes an attack against another target, the Xolocan can use its Reaction to make a melee weapon attack with its elongated, bone-laden limbs against that creature.
-
Effect: The Xolocan lashes out with its sharp bones, dealing 1d6 + 3 piercing damage if the attack hits.
-
Limitations: This can only be triggered when an enemy within range makes an attack against another target.
Explanation of the Reaction Abilities:
-
Bone Shield: This reaction allows the Xolocan to defend others by summoning protective bone armor. It fits with the Xolocan's role as a guardian, using its bone-weaving magic to shield allies or itself when an enemy attacks.
-
Bone Lash: This reaction allows the Xolocan to strike back at enemies who are within range, making it a great counterattack ability. It’s useful if the Xolocan is surrounded or trying to punish enemies who focus on other targets.
Bone Rebirth (Costs 2 Actions)
When the Xolocan (Bone Weaver) is reduced to 0 hit points, it can expend 2 actions to immediately reform itself. The creature rises from the bones surrounding it, regaining half of its maximum hit points. It immediately shatters nearby bones, dealing 2d10 piercing damage to any creatures within 10 feet. The Xolocan cannot use this ability again until after a long rest.
- Effect: This mythic action lets the Xolocan defy death and rise again with greater power, representing its near-immortality and the unstoppable nature of death itself.
Bone Storm (Costs 3 Actions)
The Xolocan calls upon the spirits and bones of the dead that linger in the area to create a deadly Bone Storm. The creature summons a swirling storm of animated bones, which fill a 30-foot radius around it. Creatures in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 18), taking 4d10 piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Additionally, creatures that fail their saving throw are knocked prone.
- Effect: The Bone Storm causes mass destruction and chaos, emphasizing the Xolocan's role as a powerful guardian and destroyer. It’s an area-of-effect attack that can turn the tide of battle.
Spectral Bone Wall (Costs 2 Actions)
As an immediate reaction to an incoming attack, the Xolocan can summon a Bone Wall that appears as a barrier of intertwined bones and spirits. This wall can block 15 feet of space and provides full cover against ranged or melee attacks for 1 round. It can absorb up to 50 points of damage before crumbling. If the Bone Wall absorbs all its damage, it shatters, dealing 2d8 piercing damage to creatures within 10 feet.
- Effect: The Spectral Bone Wall allows the Xolocan to defend itself or others from incoming damage, reinforcing its nature as a defender of tombs and curses.
Spectral Bone Legion (Costs 3 Actions)
Once per day, the Xolocan can use its connection to the dead to summon an army of spectral bone warriors. The Xolocan calls forth 3 Spectral Warriors (use the Ghost stat block) that obey its commands for 1 minute. These spectral warriors are immune to necrotic damage and have the ability to deal 1d10 necrotic damage with their spectral touch. The Xolocan can give them orders on its turn.
- Effect: This mythic action reinforces the Xolocan's position as a guardian and controller of death. The summoned warriors add a terrifying new element to the battlefield and are difficult to combat due to their spectral nature.
Description
The Xolocan, also known as the Bone Weaver, is a pale, humanoid creature with an eerie skeletal form, elongated limbs, and bone-like structures protruding from its body. Its skin is stretched thin, revealing an intricate web of exposed bones that seem to shift and grow as the creature moves. The Xolocan is often found in desolate burial grounds, cursed tombs, or other forsaken locations where death and decay reign.
Driven by an instinctual need to protect the sacred spaces it inhabits, the Xolocan serves as a guardian of ancient relics, tombs, and forgotten knowledge. It is highly territorial and will aggressively defend its domain from any intruders, using its bone-weaving powers to create barriers, traps, and constructs to halt any would-be treasure hunters or adventurers.
The Xolocan's bone-based magic allows it to summon skeletal constructs, harden its body into a bony shield, or lash out with sharp, jagged limbs. Despite its monstrous appearance, the Xolocan retains a cunning intelligence and a deep understanding of death and the forces that bind souls to the earth. It is capable of casting powerful necromantic spells, drawing upon the spirits of the dead to fuel its magic and enhance its formidable defenses.
While it is a solitary and reclusive creature, the Xolocan is not to be underestimated. Its ability to adapt and regenerate with its bone magic makes it a dangerous and unrelenting foe.
Lair and Lair Actions
Lair Description:
The Obsidian Crypt, the lair of the Xolocan, is a place of unrelenting darkness, carved deep beneath the Scarlet Atrium. It is a vast network of winding corridors and tombs, all constructed from smooth, black obsidian that absorbs all light, casting a suffocating gloom over everything. The walls are inscribed with ancient necrotic runes that pulse faintly with the power of the dead. The scent of old blood lingers in the air, and the quiet hum of restless spirits fills the crypt.
At the center of the crypt lies the Altar of Severance, a massive obsidian slab where sacrifices are made to strengthen the crypt's necromantic power. Around the crypt, the souls of the long-dead leaders of the Bloodstone Oracle Clan linger, their restless spirits sometimes taking form in the shadows, guiding or hindering those who dare trespass.
The Xolocan calls this place home, using the crypt’s necrotic power to sustain itself and continue its vigil over the cursed tombs.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Xolocan takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Xolocan can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:
-
Bone Barrage: The Xolocan causes bones from the walls and floor to burst forth, forming a barrage of jagged projectiles. All creatures within 30 feet of the Xolocan must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 16), taking 3d6 piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful save. The bones remain lodged in the walls, making the area difficult terrain until the end of the Xolocan's next turn.
-
Necrotic Pulse: The Xolocan releases a pulse of necrotic energy from the crypt, causing the spirits of the dead to manifest briefly. All creatures within 60 feet of the Xolocan must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 15), taking 2d6 necrotic damage on a failed save or half as much on a successful save. The area is suffused with necrotic energy, causing disadvantage on any healing done within the area until the end of the Xolocan's next turn.
-
Bone Constructs: The Xolocan animates the bones of fallen warriors and the surrounding environment to form skeletal guardians. It summons 2d4 Skeletons or a Bone Golem (using the stats of a Stone Golem, but with an increased vulnerability to fire) to fight on its behalf. These constructs appear within 30 feet of the Xolocan, remaining until destroyed.
Regional Effects
The region containing the Obsidian Crypt and the Xolocan's lair is steeped in dark necromantic energy, which creates the following effects:
-
Eerie Whispers: The spirits of the dead in the crypt are restless, and their whispers can be heard just on the edge of perception. Any creature in the region that attempts to sleep or meditate has disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks and Wisdom saving throws. Additionally, any creature attempting to cast a spell that requires concentration within 1 mile of the lair must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 14) or have disadvantage on their concentration check.
-
Necrotic Fog: The area around the Obsidian Crypt is shrouded in a thick, necrotic fog that reduces visibility to 30 feet. This fog causes all healing spells cast within the region to restore only half the normal amount of hit points. It also causes any creature to suffer 1d6 necrotic damage at the start of its turn while within the fog, unless the creature is undead or has resistance to necrotic damage.
-
Unnatural Darkness: The sun rarely shines on the crypt’s immediate surroundings. Even in daylight, the area remains in shadow. Creatures that lack darkvision suffer disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws in this region.
Effect After the Xolocan's Death:
If the Xolocan dies, the regional effects begin to fade over the course of 1d6 days:
- The whispers of the dead slowly stop, leaving the area eerily silent, as if the spirits have finally been freed.
- The necrotic fog lifts, returning the area to its natural state, though lingering traces of darkness remain.
- The unnatural darkness that shrouds the crypt fades, allowing sunlight to once again touch the ground around it.
