Multiattack. The dragon makes three Rend attacks.
Rend. Melee Attack Roll: +11, reach 10 ft. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 6) Slashing damage.
Sand Breath (Recharge 5–6). Constitution Saving Throw: DC 19, each creature in a 60-foot Cone. Failure: 55 (10d10) Bludgeoning damage. Success: Half damage.
Legendary Action Uses: 3 (4 in Lair). Immediately after another creature’s turn, the dragon can expend a use to take one of the following actions. The dragon regains all expended uses at the start of each of its turns.
Sand Burst. Strength Saving Throw: DC 17, each creature in a 30-foot-radius Sphere centered on a point the dragon can see within 120 feet. Failure: 11 (2d10) Bludgeoning damage. Failure or Success: The dragon can’t take this action again until the start of its next turn.
Tremor: The dragon slams its tail into the ground, creating a tremor in a 30-foot radius centered on the dragon. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Burrow and Ambush: The dragon burrows up to half its burrowing speed and emerges from the ground at a point within 30 feet. It can then make one rend attack.
Description
Adult Brown Dragons
Adult brown dragons assert dominance over vast desert expanses, becoming apex predators in these unforgiving realms. Some remain concealed within their subterranean lairs, while others patrol their territories, their presence a constant threat. When they detect movement across the dunes, they may erupt from the sands to hunt, or to demand tribute from any who dare to intrude upon their domain.
Brown Dragons
Among the most territorial of chromatic dragons, brown dragons value dominion above all else. Life is a constant struggle for survival in the harsh, sun-baked deserts where these dragons thrive. Brown dragons aggressively defend their territories, scouring the arid lands for prey and signs of encroachment. They pay little heed to the machinations of lesser creatures and other dragons, focusing solely on maintaining their absolute control.
Brown dragons carve out lairs deep beneath the sands, fortifying these subterranean fortresses against the elements and rival predators. Within these hidden strongholds, brown dragons amass trophies that demonstrate their power, such as the desiccated remains of formidable beasts, the weapons of vanquished foes, and peculiar artifacts unearthed from the sands. To safeguard their treasures, brown dragons bury their hoards within hidden chambers or conceal them within treacherous quicksand traps. For brown dragons, each piece of treasure signifies a conquest—the details of which grow more exaggerated with each passing year.
Lair and Lair Actions
Brown Dragon Lairs
Brown dragons dwell in sun-scorched lairs excavated from the heart of arid deserts.
The region containing an adult or ancient brown dragon’s lair is affected by its presence, creating the following effects:
- Scorching Heat. The area within 1 mile of the lair is an area of extreme heat. Any water in that area is superheated. See the Dungeon Master’s Guide for rules on extreme heat and superheated water.
- Dust-Choked Haze. The area within 1 mile of the lair is lightly obscured by a swirling haze of dust and sand. Whenever a creature other than the dragon or one of its allies finishes a Long Rest in that area, that creature must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight for 1 hour.
- Shifting Sands. Within the Lair itself, and up to a quarter of a mile from the Lair entrance, the ground is considered difficult terrain. Additionally, any creature that ends its turn on the sand must make a DC 13 dexterity saving throw or sink 5 feet into the sand. This sinkhole effect ends when the creature uses half of its movement to climb out of the hole, or when the dragon uses a lair action to cause the ground to shift.
If the dragon dies or moves its lair elsewhere, these effects end immediately.
