Description

Welcome to the MiniDeity (TM) Template!

At some point, you or your players have probably had the fantasy of defeating gods in dnd. I mean, who wouldn't want to best the strongest of the strong, defeat the undefeated, and have massive bragging rights in your friend group? Unfortunately, doing so in 5e brings up a few issues. First of all, there are only like, 2 statted gods in the official books. Second of all, the "real challenge" of the two has a CR of 30. This obviously makes sense, but forces players who want to beat her to have basically maxed out their characters. This may not seem like a problem, just play high level, right? Third problem: Many high level games, especially those centered around combat end up not being very fun. Thanks to how dnd scales monsters in accordance to players, most of the encounters end up being too easy or an absolute slog to get through. Sometimes both. Therefore, in order to combat high level syndrome while still allowing players to defeat some deities, I have invented the perfect solution: the MiniDeity! (TM)

A MiniDeity is basically just a god that has had all of their combat stats toned down a lot. They still count as a god sort of, but they can be beaten by lower level players. Now, I know this may seem counter intuitive; wouldn't weakening the deity ruin the point? Why not just use any other monster? Well, gods aren't just their combat power. I believe what really makes a deity is their status and control over their portfolio. A fearsome Dragon may be able to defeat a MiniDeity of fire in a fight, but the MiniDeity could control fire and set things ablaze all over the world while the dragon would need serious magical help to do the same. Similarly, the dragon might be feared in the cities surrounding it, but is really only known in the country it resides in, while the MiniDeity is known and worshiped across multiple worlds.

Basically, when using a MiniDeity in your campaigns, hype them up like they aren't mini. Have people killed by invisible forces just for talking bad about the MiniDeity. Have their cultists and clerics tracking them down at every turn. Make your players believe that a real deity really wants them dead. And when they ask: "why are we going to fight a god? We're only level 8?" 

Tell them: "It's a MiniDeity (TM)"

Or don't. And let them freak out.

When it comes to the fight, make sure to give your players a hard time. The fight should be beatable, as it's kinda the whole point, but give them a massive challenge to make them feel like they earned it. Have the MiniDeity pull out all types of BS; this a template after all, the only limit is how much you think you players can handle. Once they win, make sure to hype them up as much as you want, shower them in riches, give them a ton of levels, I don't care. Just make sure you let them know that they really beat a god so they can have the ultimate friend bragging rights.

"I beat a Deity in DnD!"

"What? But your character is only level 9!?"

"It was a MiniDeity (TM)."
