Traits

  • Stoneborn Frame. The Durithid has advantage on saving throws against being knocked prone, shoved, or moved against its will.

  • Dwarven Ascendance. Durithid are completely immune to poison and cannot be poisoned

  • Mental Stoneflesh. Its body resonates with stone. Its melee attacks count as magical for overcoming resistances, and while standing on stone, it gains a +2 bonus to AC.

  • Psionic Metallurgy. The Durithid can sense the shape of stone and metal within 60 ft., allowing it to detect secret doors, weak points, or hollow tunnels automatically. Nonmagical locks are immediately dismantled. This also gives it Tremorsense up to 60 ft. so long as its feet are planted on the ground

Actions

Multiattack. The Durithid makes two attacks: one Tentacle and one Slam.

Tentacle. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 14 (2d8+4) psychic damage, and if the target is Medium or smaller it is grappled (escape DC 15). Until this grapple ends, the Durithid can’t use this tentacle on another target.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 17 (2d10+4) bludgeoning damage.

Mindquake Stomp (Recharge 5–6). The Durithid channels psionics into the ground. Each creature within 20 ft. must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or take 21 (6d6) thunder damage and be knocked prone. On a success, the creature takes half damage and isn’t knocked prone.

Stone Warp (Recharge 6). The Durithid manipulates stone in a 20-ft. cube within 60 ft. One of the following effects occurs:

  • Wall Rise. A 10-ft. long, 10-ft. high, 1-ft. thick wall of stone erupts from the ground, lasting 1 minute.

  • Ground Buckle. The ground in a 15-ft. radius becomes difficult terrain until cleared.

  • Stone Spear. A jagged spike of stone erupts under one creature within range. The target must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 18 (4d8) piercing damage and be restrained until the start of its next turn.

Extract Brain. If the Durithid starts its turn with a creature grappled and at 0 hit points, it devours the brain and regains 20 Hit Points. The creature dies instantly.

Description

Stocky and broad, with jagged plates of chitinous stone sprouting from their flesh, Durithids stride through the Underdark like living fortresses. Their thick, plated forms resemble dwarves carved from stone and animated by alien will, their tentacles draping grotesquely like a parody of a beard.

Durithids are prized by Elder Brains not for their martial prowess, but for their unparalleled psionic metallurgical talents. With thought and touch, they can coax stone to flow like clay and fuse metal with organic tissue. It is through their craft that the semi-organic architecture of mind flayer colonies takes shape: walls of living stone that pulse like muscle, lattices of steel that drip with alien ichor, and corridors that feel both carved and grown.

Though formidable in battle, the Durithid is most dangerous in its workshops and strongholds. Entire lairs twist under its guidance, halls bending to its will, traps woven seamlessly into the alien masonry. A single Durithid can build fortifications that rival dwarven citadels, yet no sane artisan would ever call their work beautiful — only horrifying in its seamless fusion of stone, steel, and flesh.

Reclusive by nature, Durithids emerge from their workshops only when their hunger for fresh brains overcomes their discipline. Those who seek them out often find not a monster wandering the dark, but an alien fortress standing where once there was only cavern — a monument to the terrible artistry of stone warped by psionic thought.
