Traits

Amphibious. The abysmal remnant can breathe air and water.

Magic Resistance.
The abysmal remnant has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Sense Magic. The abysmal remnant senses magic within 120 feet of itself. This trait otherwise works like the Detect Magic spell but isn’t itself magical.

Creature Sense. The abysmal remnant is aware of the presence of creatures within 1 mile of it that have an Intelligence score of 8 or higher. It knows the distance and direction to each creature. A creature protected by a mind blank spell, a nondetection spell, or similar magic can’t be perceived in this manner.

Telepathic Centre. The abysmal remnant can use its telepathy to initiate and maintain telepathic conversations with up to five creatures at a time.

Phlegm Veil. While underwater, the abysmal remnant is surrounded by phlegm. Constitution Saving Throw: DC 14, each creature in a 5-foot Emanation originating from the abysmal remnant as soon as they enter range for the first time. Success: The target is immune to the effects of the veil for 24 hours. Failure: The target is cursed. Until the curse ends, the target’s skin becomes slimy, the target can breathe air and water, and it can’t regain Hit Points unless it is underwater.

Actions

Multiattack. The abysmal remnant makes two bite attacks.

Bite.
Melee Attack Roll: +11, reach 10 ft. Hit: 11 (2d8 + 7) Piercing damage plus 5 (2d4) Acid damage.

Tongue. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 40 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d12 + 4) bludgeoning damage. If the target is Medium or smaller, it is grappled (escape DC 15), pulled up to 30 feet toward the abysmal remnant, and restrained until the grapple ends. The abysmal remnant can grapple one target at a time with its tongue.

Spew Bile (Recharge 5-6). Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 14, each creature in a 30-foot-long, 5-foot-wide Line. Failure: 18 (4d8) Acid damage. Success: Half damage.

Bonus Actions

Lunging Swallow (Underwater only). Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 19, If the target is a large or smaller creature and the abysmal remnant moved 30+ feet toward it (it can have up to one creatures swallowed at a time). Failure: The target is swallowed by the abysmal remnant. A swallowed creature has the Blinded and Restrained conditions, it has Total Cover against attacks and other effects outside the abysmal remnant, and it takes 10 (3d6) Acid damage at the start of each of the abysmal remnant’s turns.

If the abysmal remnant takes 30 damage or more on a single round, the abysmal remnant must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, each of which falls in a space within 5 feet of the abysmal remnant and has the Prone condition. If the abysmal remnant dies, any swallowed creature no longer has the Restrained condition and can escape from the corpse by using 15 feet of movement, exiting Prone.

Description

An abysmal remnant is at least seven meters long, and so bloated it could never leave the pool of foul slime that supports its bulk. Its hide is tough and leathery, protected by thin spines and colored a disgusting grey-green. Its head appears to consist of a myriad all-seeing eyes spread in a wide sweep above an enormous toothy maw, that also contains a long slimy pink prehensile tongue.

The species does not appear to have any limbs which are able to provide or aid locomotion, which indicates that the beast is a sedentary lurker, not an active hunter or migrator, and never leaves its habitat unless it is forced to. Another hint to this is the fact that an Abysmal Remnant is found in a pool that is always filled with acidic slime, quite likely secreted by itself, to aid in digesting its prey.

The origins and distribution of Abysmal Remnant's are obscure. Certain physical features, such as its tongue, and skin texture and mutability, as well as its semi-aquatic lifestyle, suggested an amphibian heritage, although it is more commonly classified as an Aberration.

An Abysmal Remnant's one major weakness had always been its two real eyes, so it evolved hundreds of fake 'eyes' that rose in crimson blisters before bursting open on its head. Anyone taking on the creature will need a lucky strike to hit its real eyes and pierce its brain. It is unknown whether or not an abysmal remnant could be injured by blows to its body, since that possibility is left unexplored.

Attempting such a blow, however, means avoiding the thing's tongue. Unless its opponent could slash off the tongue with a sharp blade they would be dragged into the pool, where the powerful acidic slime would quickly decompose their body, until they were ready to be devoured.

An Abysmal Remnant's pool of acidic slime often gave off a toxic gas that victims would have to avoid. Those unfortunates who were unlucky would be overcome by the fumes and faint, and be dragged by the creature's tongue into the pool to their doom.
