Traits

Painted Form. Xutor can change their appearance within the painting as a free action at any time, and can take on any form when they do so. While motionless, Xutor is indistinguishable from a normal painting.

Antimagic Susceptibility. Xutor is incapacitated while in the area of an antimagic field. If targeted by dispel magic, they must succeed on a Constitution saving throw against the caster’s spell save DC or become unconscious for 1 minute.

Partially Animate. Xutor automatically fails any Dexterity saving throws they make.

Innate Spellcasting. Xutor's innate spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 14). They can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components.

At will: mage hand, minor illusion, vicious mockery

3/day each: healing word, silent image

1/day each: dissonant whispers, Tasha's hideous laughter, telekinesis

Bonus Actions

Merry Jaunt. Xutor moves from their current painting to any other painting within 100ft. of themself.

Reactions

Quick Jaunt. Trigger: Xutor takes damage from an attack or spell originating from a creature or object they can see. Xutor uses their Merry Jaunt ability, and takes only half damage.

Description

Xutor is an animated painting, a construct created by the cloud giants to guard the secrets of one of their libraries. They typically prefer the image of a gaudily dressed figure hiding their face behind a subtly disturbing mask, but they can easily change their appearance to display beasts, crowds of people, or even landscapes. Their penchant for mischief, and their ability to leap between paintings at the first sign of danger, makes them a nightmare for would-be robbers.

Lair and Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Xutor takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; Xutor can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Books fly off of nearby shelves, pelting nearby creatures with blunt, heavy tomes. Each bookshelf within 120ft. of Xutor fires a stream of books in a 15ft. straight line outward, and any creature in this line must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 4 (1d6) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. Thereafter, any space touched by the line becomes difficult terrain, as the books fall to the floor and pile up.
  • A cloud of thick dust fills the air within 30ft. of Xutor, which dissipates after one minute. Creatures within the cloud of dust have Disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks that rely on sight. A creature that starts its turn within the cloud, or enters it for the first time on its turn, must make a concentration check if they are maintaining concentration. On a failure, they lose concentration.
  • Up to 3 paintings within 60ft. of Xutor display an illusory image of themself, each of which is indistinguishable from the original. Xutor can cast spells from these duplicates as if they shared the duplicates' spaces, and can cause them to move to a new painting using their Merry Jaunt bonus action. If a duplicate takes damage, it dissipates. If Xutor uses this action while any duplicates remain, they immediately dissipate before the new ones appear. Xutor can cause any number of their duplicates to dissipate as a free action on their turn.
  • Xutor causes a hanging chandelier to fall. Each creature in a 10ft. square in a space of Xutor's choosing within 60ft. of themself must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, they take 6 (1d10) piercing damage and are stunned until the end of their next turn.
