Camouflage. While the Campbrier remains motionless in grassy/woodland terrain, it makes all Stealth checks with advantage.
Keen Hearing and Smell. The Campbrier has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 14). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the Campbrier can't bite another target.
Cinder Spark. In response to an incoming melee attack, the Campbrier can direct its back plume at its opponent. The creature must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw. It takes 2d10 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Posted Jul 30, 2020Our DM recently put our level 3 party up against 2 of these.
Our party consists of only three people, and one of us was absent at the time. During the fight, when my goblin fighter went to attack it, the DM had it use it's reaction for cinder spark. I took something like 8 fire damage, and I had already been weakened slightly from it's attack in the last round. I asked the DM what he did and he read out the ability. Me and the other player said that sounded a bit overboard and asked for the CR. He told us it was CR 3, and I explained to him that that means we'd need a full party of level 3 characters to reasonably fight this. He then sent us the stat block, we looked at it, and we all agreed that it was definitely NOT CR 3. This would be much better placed at CR 5, considering the fact that on average, it's dishing out 25 damage per round (assuming it uses it's reaction each time), which is usually just a few points less than the maximum HP of a level 3 character. Even a barbarian with a 16 in Constitution would go down in only 2 rounds to this thing.
As for some formatting/mechanical issues, it's stealth bonus is way too high with that negative. Even if it has expertise in stealth, it's modifier would only be +3. Secondly, it's a small creature, so it's hit dice are d6's, not d12's. It has a +1 modifier to Wisdom, so it's Passive Perception should be 11, not 10.
My fighter, with a Constitution score of 15, has 28 HP maximum. On average, it would only take 2 rounds for the campbriar to down my character (who has the most HP in the party).
Granted, it was definitely on the DM for not taking a good look at this first and putting 2 of them up against 2 of us, but we all agreed after looking at the stat block that this is not balanced for a level 3 party.

Posted Nov 15, 2022One question, does the 'Cinder Spark' reaction cancel the attack that triggers is or does the Campbriar still get hit?
