Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 17, 2020
Additions: As much as we love our fearless leader and our designer's cat Zummo, we have removed Happy Adam and Bob Ross Adam from the Combatant avatar fallback images and replaced them with something more generic and familiar.
Fixes: The old text color for initiatives on friendly and enemy combatants had the appearance of being inactive, so we improved initiative contrast and darkened some color so it is less confusing.
Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 10, 2020
Additions:Hit Point Widget added: We all know that most D&D Players don't particularly care for doing math while they tell their story, so we have implemented a HP adjustment widget to help you add and subtract Hit Points.
Now when you "click" on monster stat block links (tooltips) it will open in a new tab preventing your Combat from loosing all of it's progress.
We have been using the Combat Tracker in our home games for a few weeks, and although it is certainly not in a finished state yet, we experienced enough value that we have decided to go ahead and release it now - even in its unfinished state - to both 1) let subscribers gain some of that value and 2) get feedback as early as possible.
Please keep in mind that this is not a finished product, and we invite subscribers to help us make it the best it can be!
Who can use the Combat Tracker?
All D&D Beyond Subscribers. The Combat Tracker is in full active development right now. We will be allowing early access to NEW Combat Tracker features to our Subscribers first, to prove out concepts and new functionality. We took the same approach with the Alpha version of the Encounter Builder with much success. This delivery method allows us to digest feedback in bite sized chunks and perform testing to figure out the best user experience possible.
What is a Development Alpha?
The Development Alpha of the Combat Tracker allows us to test features and user experience.
-
Functional but expecting a lot of bugs
-
Should be no core functionality bugs
-
Core functionality could change with feedback
-
Functionality could appear or disappear at any time
We will be working on validating bug reports and cleaning up the Combat Tracker. Once these tasks have been completed we will release to Beta, essentially meaning the Combat Tracker tool is complete.
Please leave Feedback here
you access the combat tracker from the encounter builder: there should be “run” buttons by each of the encounters you have made.
Is there currently a way to plug in characters manually if everyone does not have their stuff up on DnD Beyond with the alpha?
My wish list as condensed as possible.
Great work so far!
Fair enough! Though I would still not expect ties to be interleaved like they are, it seems my request should instead be directed at having the ability to adjudicate ties manually (or based on common/user-defined rules).
When setting up your encounter, you can click "Manage Characters" and then hide characters from the encounter calculation. This also removes them from the combat tracker.
With the encounter builder, you increase the number of identical monsters with the + button instead of adding that monster manually a second time. This fixes that scenario.
Awesome! This looks like a really good start, but I feel it's lacking some features I need during combat. I understand that this is just the beginning of the alpha though, and not all features are finalised yet.
The following would be crucial features for me to run an encounter.
The following ones would be very handy, although not as crucial as the previous ones.
I hope these will be added to the combat tracker eventually, so it will become a useful and helpful tool to run combats.
I'm a member in a subscriber's game(though i run more than he does) will I have access to the combat tracker?
No, content sharing will have no influence on the availability of the combat tracker.
I have an encounter with 3 Frost Giants. I want to have each one of them have their own initiative. I can do that, but they're not labeled (A, B, C or whatever). I think this has already been mentioned but it's definitely an issue with me too.
I second this suggestion. Less math is good. Being able to submit damage or healing and let the tool do the math would be awesome.
It looks good and I haven't encountered any bugs in testing it so far. That being said a few features I think would improve it:
It's built into the Encounter Builder. Build an encounter, then you're given the option to "run" it.
I think you mentioned that you were working on this, but I would really love to be able to split groups of monsters and assign each individual one their own initiative!
And spell durations...
Same; had a monster with a +2 to initiative roll a 1 for initiative..
Nice.
Now I just need to be able to save my player's names to the encounter, so they show up on the tracker.
Not so much the combat tracker than the encounter builder, but when trying to add characters from the campaign, only 20 shows up. Had to deactivate some. This was on the iPad.
Looking great so far. This is going to be something I can't DM without in the future.
I would like to see buttons like (+10 +5 +1, -1, -5, -10) next to the monster HP for quick adjustments. For some reason it is easier for me to know that 17 points of damage is clicking a +10, +5, +1 +1 instead of doing subtraction. Yes, the subtraction is simple, but when I'm keeping up with combat pace the faster I can go the better the experience for my players.
For me, having to translate a 17 to a 10, 5, 1, 1 is just more math, especially since to make sure that I have not pressed too many times, I would have to do the original subtraction that you try to avoid with the buttons anyway.
