Greetings Everyone!
We're happy to announce the Digital Dice Alpha is now live on the Character Sheet for subscribers only.
These digital dice will help you reduce the math you have to do when playing D&D. We encourage everyone to give them a roll and tell us how they feel!
If you'd like to turn off Dice rolling on the character sheet for any reason, you can click on your character dropdown and toggle the Digital Dice off.
As a thank you, you will also receive a free set of Old School dice that celebrates our roots. You can activate them by going to the My Dice page under "Collections" on the top nav.
If you'd like to learn more about how to use the dice or to give us feedback, visit our Digital Dice Feedback Forum.
Thanks all. Happy rolling!

First rolls in. I love the UI and using the screen as a dice box. It. Is a lot of fun watching the dice roll like they do on the actual table.
A couple areas I am wrestling with are: how do you customize spells and magic items?
Example 1: chaos bolt can you chose two different colored dice for selection of type of damage? Also the damage is 2d8 plus 1d6 and the 1d6 does not role when you role damage. Can we build that into damage or do we need to do that manually (based on level the spell is cast)?
Example 2: javelin of lightning. Attack role and damage for the javelin (1d6) is fine but if using the lightning feature does not seems to be available. (Same question as above)
Basically, are there features to account for the various peculiarities of spells/magic items? Or do we just go to the dice icon in lower left place select dice of the kind and amount we wish to roll?
thanks for building this it is a thing of beauty!!
Yep, I agree. Why bother unless the group can see the role, as you would at a real TT. We're all playing VTT at the moment so I can't see the point of this when other platforms provide dice you can share. You need not to release stuff until things are ready and actually of some practical in the game.
I would like to know this too.
So in how many features are we getting a roll20-like online DnD platform from you fine folks? =P
Is there a way to turn off the animation and just have the numbers? It was fun the first one or two times, then just felt annoying. Still, the dice roller is a cool feature and works will the the roll 20 extension
so after messing around with the dice, it seems there may be an issue using the selection dice at the bottom left, after rolling a d20 the first time it showed up but it remained where it landed, and when trying to click on other options to roll, no other dice would appear but it would still calculate the appropriate roll.
after trying to refresh the page, I get a summoned beholder error and become unable to view my character's pages until I close the tab completely and reopen it.
so far in it seems to be on the desktop, not sure if anyone else is experiencing this.
Thanks! This is great. As a DM with a large party of 8 higher level players, battles can be very tedious as people take time to do dice math. We all have our computer devices and D&D Beyond to do stuff and love the look of real dice. However there are a few things that would make this even better, many of which have already been said by others.
Speed: The time between click dice roll and display of results could be faster. Especially the time after the dice stop rolling and the popup of the result. There's a balance between visual appeal of dice roll (which is awesome) and practicality of getting results to move along. But once the dice stop moving the results should be close to instant.
Display to others in campaign: Clearly something you're working on but an option for that is a real key.
Special features: Sneak attack and things. Don't think it needs to be 1 click for everything added together (that wouldn't make a lot of sense), but a click on sneak attack damage would be nice.
Quick Roll: Having the Custom roll feature is great. But it would be cool to have a few custom dice slot icons where I could store a quick roll like for sneak attack or a Slayer feature or other things that I want to grab quickly.
Advantage / disadvantage. If the display were faster it's easy enough to click on the roll twice or double click or something? It's impossible to know when the DM is gonig to tell you to make a check with advantage or disadvantage and even if you typically have advantage on something the DM may say "straight roll". So forcing Advantage all the time doesn't make sense either. Simply rolling twice (quickly) would be my preference.
History: This is all a matter of preference and screen real estate. Personally I prefer a collapsible section that I can scroll up and down to see roll results. wold make sense to have it tied to the Custom Roll Die.
Will non subscribers get to use this later on? Because if not there are a lot of other websites and apps I could use for free but yeah.
I really love this.
I have a few nit-picks
1. The delay on the roll feels too long, a quicker roll or option to skip the dice animation would be nice.
2. On mobile devices the the roll output area takes up a lot of screen space, a smaller font or only show the minimized history type view for mobile would help.
I LOVE THE VIRTUAL DICE!
So I admit that I was skeptical. What kind of random number generator could dish out the kind of satisfaction that tossing a handful of polyhedrals does?
I opened up DnD Beyond and I am already loooooving this. I went to a high level char and tossed a chain lightning down and giggled in fiendish glee as all the damage dice rolled across the screen.
So things I love:
- The realistic rolling animation. It's like rolling dice on a paper sheet.
- I love that it will speed up gaming A LOT because people can stop going "oh wait I have to add the plus four" or "oh hang on I added that wrong" or "can someone lend me a d8?"
- It's so easy and pretty and great.
Problems so far:
- I rolled damage dice before the d20 had vanished and I got the result, but not the damage dice animation. So maybe allow for more than one set / roll to show up at once? or enable clicking on the sheet to clear the dice there?
- The dice should fade out half a second faster to keep the momentum up. Especially if it's a roll to hit, I want to be able to roll damage fast, while I'm excited.
Features I want:
- Excuse you, why aren't you selling dice sets yet? I want to buy five?
- There should be a menu option in the character portrait drop down that lets you pick which dice set you associate with each character. That way I can buy a dice set for each character like I do in real life.
- I want crossover dice sets, like the crit role ones, or regular dice that don't have a B on them for the 20, or ones that have different things other than a B, like a flame or a unicorn or a skull or whatever fits my character.
Verdict:
Awesome feature, I'm gonna try it out at the next gaming session - especially since we're all online anyway. Now I can sit in my comfy chair with my laptop and roll without reaching way over for the dice tray. (This sounds lazier that I am, I swear.) I look forward to seeing how the party likes this new feature.
I think this has been a great addition!
I loved using it last night for our Virtual game played through Zoom. You're just a step away from having a completely functional virtual platform. Please replace Roll20 and their glitchy nature; I love what DND Beyond is doing. I would much rather have content in only one location than instead of across three platforms 2 virtual, and one physical.
I am using Beyond20 to integrate character sheets to Roll20. How do I turn the dice function off, as it is interfering with rolls being made on Roll20?
NM saw a post above. Thanks.
Any chance you'll be including the dice roller in character creation?
Hi there team!
Thank you for implementing this feature its amazing! I did notice that when my sorcerer tries to cast chaos bolt it does not ask on the character sheet to roll the 1D6 in addition to 2D8. Not sure if that was intentional or not, but wanted to call that out.
Thanks again team for all the great work you are doing!
Just a couple thoughts ...
1. There are a lot of good ideas already in the comments & I'd like to concur: we shouldn't have to scroll to see all out skills ... attack & damage rolls should be able to be combined in one button click ... users should be able to toggle the animation on & off ... these are good ideas that I'd like to see implements.
2. I would like to know ... can other players/DM see the rolls as they happen - or at least see the results if not the actual animation (see above about toggling the animation on/off)? There should be an option for the DM and/or players to allow/require rolls to be fully transparent ... I have had situation where players have taken advantage of rolling secretly and cheated.
Hey team! Overall, great job on this! Echoing many comments already posted. I think the key to remember for us players/DM's is this is in Alpha, so not complete yet. This is an excellent step forward and I am excited to see the final result. I definitely plan on using this when it fits my character campaigns.
1) This is ugly as hell. You need to figure out how to make it look less chaotic on the character sheet
2) Dice are slow. It takes a full second to roll a die and an additional 2 seconds to get the result. On top of that, it does not store my rolls indefinitely, so I need to write down the outcome after each roll, adding another 2 seconds.
- Also, It doesn't account for advantage or multi-attack/multiple beams. Also, it limits the number of times I can hit the same button in a row (to 3 I think?). So I need to clear it to keep rolling.
- This means that my Eldritch blast at 11th level while using greater invisibility requires 6 rolls at 5 seconds each or a full 30 seconds of sitting there, hitting the roll button and writing down results before I can say "2 hits". Then I still have to roll for damage. If I just used my 6 x 20-sided dice, I could have this done in 10 seconds flat. I timed it and it took me about 1:18 to do what I just described through your roll tool
There is probably a few more things I could add but you guys still have a lot of work to do on this.
Most of it has been already mentioned, but here it goes:
This is not to say that DnD Beyond should copy Roll20 or not, but when it comes to 3D dices, Roll20 is top of mind here.
Keep up with the good work! I'm a big fan!
