The D&D Beyond App is an indispensable tool at the table, putting all your character information and game rules at your fingertips. The mobile app allows you to view dice rolls in the Game Log and review player character sheets in real-time in the campaign view. With our latest update, Dungeon Masters can now roll dice in the app with ease!
For instructions on accessing the Game Log and campaign view, select your mobile operating system: Android or iOS. Otherwise, click here to learn about key features, including dice rolling for DMs!
Accessing the campaign view and Game Log
Before proceeding, make sure you have the latest version of the app installed. Load the app page in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store and select the update option. Alternatively, go to the page where you manage your apps and check if the D&D Beyond App is listed as ready to update.
Once you have the latest update, you should see the bottom menu bar has changed. What you see will depend on whether you’re on an Android or iOS device.
Android
On Android, the Characters button has been replaced with Gameplay:
Tap that and you’ll be taken to the new Gameplay screen. At first glance, this resembles the previous Characters screen, but at the top you’ll see there are now two options: My Characters and My Campaigns. To access My Campaigns, you can either tap the button at the top right or swipe left.
You’ll now see a list of all the campaigns you're in, whether as a DM or as a player. Tapping one of the campaigns will take you to the Game Log. The Game Log allows you to view rolls made by characters, so you can celebrate every natural 20 together!
You can also navigate to the Characters screen. For information on what you'll find there, click here.
iOS
On iOS, you’ll find that the Bookmarks button has been replaced by the Characters button. Next to Characters, you’ll find the new Campaigns button.
Selecting Campaigns will take you to a screen where you can see the campaigns that you’re a part of.
Tapping one of these campaigns will take you to the Game Log, where you can see rolls made by characters in your campaign, as players make them! You can also tap Characters to easily access character information.
Where are my iOS bookmarks?
If you’re on an iOS device, your Bookmarks button has moved. You can now find it in the top-right corner of the Library screen.
Key features for Dungeon Masters
The D&D Beyond App allows you to access your library of official Dungeons & Dragons books. You can search for rules on the stunned condition, double-check a monster's stats, or check the range of call lightning. You can even view player character sheets in real-time, use the Game Log to see their dice rolls, and make dice rolls yourself.
View character information
Whether on Android or iOS, you can get information on the characters in your campaign by tapping Characters in the top right of the Game Log screen. Here, you'll get an overview of each active character in the campaign and get real-time information, including:
- Name, character level, race, class or classes, and player name
- Current and maximum hit points and levels of exhaustion
- Passive Perception, Investigation, and Insight scores, as well as Armor Class
- Any special senses such darkvision
- Conditions such as invisible
If you need a more detailed view, you can tap any character to be taken to their full character sheet. From these new screens, DMs have even more tools to run their games using the D&D Beyond App!
Roll dice as the Dungeon Master
DMs can freely roll digital dice in the D&D Beyond App! The dice menu for DMs can be found on the Characters screen of a campaign, in the bottom right. Tapping this option brings up the standard dice roll menu. From there, you can select the dice you wish to roll into the Game Log, whether privately to yourself or for everyone to see.
Davyd is a moderator for D&D Beyond. A Dungeon Master of over 15 years, he enjoys Marvel movies, writing, and of course running D&D for his friends and family, including his daughter Willow (well, one day). The three of them live with their two cats, Asker and Khatleesi, in south of England.
Very cool. At this point though I would suggest that DDB look at Foundry and the Moulinette module. Moulinette allows creators on patreon to provide their content directly into the VTT environment and still preserve their IP.
Honestly DDB should just partner with Foundry at this point using a similar integration. I'd be happy to pay a monthly subscription fee for Foundry integration on my DDB account.
I have talked to my players and just asked them not to look at eachother's character sheets... While yes, they still could, the game log I'm fine with, but I think just talking with your players, and asking them to NOT look at other's information would be fine imo.
Oh god no, I love foundry but Jesus, not everyone wants a VTT that requires an insane amount of work to get going.
That seems pretty neit, I'll look into it :)
The iPhone UI with separate characters and campaigns tabs is nice for playing a healer. Is there a reason the android UI is different?
I know this has already been said, but I will add my 2 cents.
Great addition! Super helpful.
Would love to get it on the web browser version.
Would love the option to hide this view from players to eliminate meta-gaming.
Well done! Keep up the great work!
Damn Davyd, I hope someone is DM'ing for you as well.
Can we get a better layout on the iPad app? its has terrible amounts of wasted space.. No one I know uses it and mainly just opens a web browser instead..
OH man! This is EXACTLY what I've been wanting from campaign tab in browser the whole time!
Hopefully that's inches away!
I would love for there to be an option to see the pc's immunities/resistances as the dm. Since it sometimes can get a bit annoying to track all those.
For browser too pls
A nice next step in the evolution of these tools. One thing I'd appreciate as a DM is better integration with the combat tracker, so that both the DM and the player could easily track their PC's hit points during combat. Currently, the encounter builder notes which campaign the encounter is for to calculate difficulty ratings and gives a static slot to each PC for initiative tracking, but the stats of the PCs don't appear in the tracker. It would be great if at least their current HP could be more easily tracked in the combat tracker, and ideally the DM could click on the PC in the tracker and pull up their character sheet, like you can do now for monsters, to quickly double check their stats (e.g., passive perception). I currently keep track of those things manually outside of the combat tracker, either in separate browser tabs or on paper, but more integration with the tracker would make life for the DM that much easier. Still, kudos for keeping these tools moving in the right direction!
Similarly, like the encounter builder where you can 'hide' some players from the calculations (when calculating CR difficulty) can you do the same here? (unfortunately, some players don't attend every session and it's annoying having to scroll past them in the middle of combat. At the very least, let us re-arrange them.
Thank you
Any idea when the encounter builder will be updated to show live HP information? I like how it is on the app but it would be great if I could see all of my PCs HP while doing combat
I have the opposite problem of privacy DMs (although theyre valid too!) I'm really frustrated at having my rolls automatically sent only to myself as the DM, and even if I make them public manually my players dont get a pop up the same way they do with other player rolls!
Has that been changed this update?
ETA: also where's the DM dice roller!? No love for RAW D:
Maybe a way to have publicly saved encounters similar to public homebrew! Crowdsource filling out those campaign encounters lol
Why does the mobile app have this but the site does not?
As a DM, being able to easily see my players passive abilities without having to ask them, is a great feature. Also makes helping new players use the app much easier. This is progress.
Yaaaaayyy! \o/
That is all :)
Thanks a lot, this was just what (i think) every DM dreamt of.
