We’ve just leveled up in a big way.
Dungeons & Dragons and D&D Beyond have always felt like a part of the same family. That’s why we’re excited to announce that D&D Beyond is formally joining Wizards of the Coast, bringing together two teams that eat, breathe, and sweat for this game and continue to strive to make D&D easy to run, exciting, and accessible to all.
You (and by you, we mean the 10 million users that have been on this adventure with us since 2017!) are probably wondering what kind of change might happen as a result of these two teams coming together, so let’s make this clear: Wizards of the Coast has no plans to stop supporting D&D Beyond. Ever. The purchases you’ve made, the characters you’ve created, and the campaigns you’ve run aren’t going anywhere.
You’ve probably got a million questions about what comes next. What we can say for sure is that we’re excited for what the future holds as we dig in with our new partners. We wish you could see the big stupid grins we’ve all been walking around with. This is truly an incredible time for all of us, and it really feels like there’s no limit to what we can accomplish for our players. Remember, the key factor that makes this partnership perfect is that these teams want one thing: to make your experience playing the World’s Greatest Roleplaying Game even better.
If you’ve been on this journey with us for a while, we’re so glad you’re here. If you’re brand new and clicked on the site today to figure out what the big news was all about, welcome! Remember to register for a free account! (Sorry, couldn’t help ourselves.) We’ll have more to share with you throughout the year, so tune in to the Dev Update, which airs on Twitch on Thursdays at 10 a.m. PT, and check out new content right here on dndbeyond.com.

I would be most excited, if they start adding tools or content for adventure's league.
i hope they add a folder section to the character creator and like a way to change the position of the characters instead of it being listed in order of creation.
To a degree, you can. In "My Characters," there's a "Sort By" dropdown. You can arrange them by order of creation (or in reverse), name (alphabetically or reverse), level (low to high or vice versa), or by how recently they were modified (again, most recent to least recent or vice versa).
I want to see discount codes for hardcover books with DnD Beyond purchase usable in Local Game Shops, not free or discounted digital coupons w physical purchase
I mean unless I can move my hard copy to my account, this changes nothing :l
TBH this makes me real nervous. I'm really hoping this doesn't go the oligopoly route, with Wizards pretty much squashing VTT integration like Roll20 now that they own a digital platform. I also hope this doesn't open the door to more official digital-only content taking priority over physical adventures (I know a few already exist, but I worry about a more pointed focus toward that route), for the sake of FLGSs.
Obviously none of this is the stated goal of Wizards, but I have my worries considering how larger companies have operated in the past. At this point I'll remain cautiously optimistic until I see the WOTC Twitter launching their NFT line.
so amazing that this is finally happening.
Here's hoping they bring back UA after this merger.
Why? There's already a subscription system, and being owned by WotC means they'll probably get extra budget, (since we can agree that Wizards/Hasbro is way stronger than Fandom financially).
And Wizards will probably experience an increase in sellings
Of course man, WotC has been getting double-paid for magic cards on magic online for years, why would they shut down the revenue stream
I hope that WotC manages to somehow not mess this up. They're not exactly known for their technological prowess.
wonderful
That is probably why they hired 2 senior Microsoft executives from there gaming arm as overall CEO of WOTC and head of Digital Services.
That would require serious recruitment, DnD beyond explained the reason why they ended it was because they did not have the resources to make feature changes, port over all the new official rules and apply the UA rules as well, especially when the UA rules then need at some point to be changed or outright removed.
My expectation is that initially WOTC will look to work on the 6th ed changes and getting them integrated and ready to go. Personally UA is way down the bottom of the list of things I want to see, overall I imagine it is used by only a small % of users most people stick to the published official material.
A list of things I would much rather they work on before UA
I want them to continue improving the Encounter Builder
Add a proper Campaign Management tool, so as a DM I can store my notes, my journal my maps, encounters and magic items all in one location. (something similar to world anvil would be fantastic).
Fix a number of small bugs/make general improvements.
Simplify the Monster/Magic item homebrew tools, some sort of a builder that saves you having to write the actual code would be amazing.
That is just a starter, my guess however, having been on the other side of an aquisition, is that WOTC will complete the purchase, and then review what they have in terms of staff and recruit slowly so as not to impact delivery too much, onboarding new people takes time and slows down development for on average 3 - 4 months while the new dev gets used to code, requirements, and process. So don't expect to see the world change immediately, in fact i doubt we will see any real difference until at least 12 months after the acquisition goes through.
UA integration was the best non core thing on this site. We could see and use what WoTC was planning without needing to homebrew it with the broken toolset that's at our disposal. I never could find myself in the given reasons. When WoTC made something official DnDb needed to implement it anyway. Now they need to do it without running into the inherent limitations of their homebrew engine. It doesn't save them work in the long run it just makes crunch time harder.
Does this mean we don’t have to buy the digital book AND the paper back? If we have proof of purchase, can we have digital copy?
Sounds great! Please don't nickel and dime us and if so I'll be a user forever.
this acquisition was planned since the conception of website, it's kind of what it was built for.
Absolutely no shock here.
Buy Roll 20 next and integrate!
Nice move, indeed! Does that mean that we might be looking forward to see PHB, DMG, MM, etc. in German, Spanish, etc. in the future? I have a couple of teens waiting and hoping for that to happen - most of them stubbornly stick to German because they don‘t even want to play if everything‘s English.
I really hope for that to have some more D&D-Fun with some more buddies. 🙏
