We’ve just leveled up in a big way.
Dungeons & Dragons and D&D Beyond have always felt like a part of the same family. That’s why we’re excited to announce that D&D Beyond is formally joining Wizards of the Coast, bringing together two teams that eat, breathe, and sweat for this game and continue to strive to make D&D easy to run, exciting, and accessible to all.
You (and by you, we mean the 10 million users that have been on this adventure with us since 2017!) are probably wondering what kind of change might happen as a result of these two teams coming together, so let’s make this clear: Wizards of the Coast has no plans to stop supporting D&D Beyond. Ever. The purchases you’ve made, the characters you’ve created, and the campaigns you’ve run aren’t going anywhere.
You’ve probably got a million questions about what comes next. What we can say for sure is that we’re excited for what the future holds as we dig in with our new partners. We wish you could see the big stupid grins we’ve all been walking around with. This is truly an incredible time for all of us, and it really feels like there’s no limit to what we can accomplish for our players. Remember, the key factor that makes this partnership perfect is that these teams want one thing: to make your experience playing the World’s Greatest Roleplaying Game even better.
If you’ve been on this journey with us for a while, we’re so glad you’re here. If you’re brand new and clicked on the site today to figure out what the big news was all about, welcome! Remember to register for a free account! (Sorry, couldn’t help ourselves.) We’ll have more to share with you throughout the year, so tune in to the Dev Update, which airs on Twitch on Thursdays at 10 a.m. PT, and check out new content right here on dndbeyond.com.

You already know the answer to this. WotC over the last decade has always picked the greedy option when presented with choice. Look at their games, mobile apps, ect.
Like every single for profit company in existence?
This is awesome! Here's hoping it means I'll be able to get digital copies of all the hardcover books I have, or at least get digital copies for hardcovers I buy in going forwards
🥳🐉
I really hope that there's the option to buy the book and get the digital edition for free, since the price of the book already factors in for WOTC both the cost of paying writers & artists for content creation and the cost of printing it. If server costs are really that big a deal, I'd be fine with a "$10 extra to get both deal", but if it stays a full price double purchase, I'm going to stick with just the print copies
This is great news!
A word to those who are asking if they can get digital credit for hardcovers purchased previously: likely no & that makes sense. If you bought a paperback novel last year then decided you wanted a digital copy on Kindle....do you think you would get credit? Just buy digital D&D books and make the switch to being fully digital with new confidence that WOtC will own D&D Beyond.
This is big news. But everyone being like oh will I be able to get a free digital since I bought my hardcover is so naïve. That will never happen. Like stop kidding yourself. I’d love to be proven wrong but I highly doubt it.
I just hope the subscription tiers don’t increase in prices.
Same, but I'd personally stay with digital copies.
If they only sell the digital version of their books on DDB, I'm pretty sure that would immediately lead to an anti-trust lawsuit. I'm much more excited for the prospect of being able to get the digital copy of the books when I get a hard copy, hopefully for free but I'd be okay with a "extra $10 to get the digital one bundled in" sort of deal
Wow, this has 75 comments in 3 hours.
Movies commonly come with a digital code in the case. You can usually buy new physical CDs for music and get the mp3s free from like Amazon. This isn't a new phenomenon. I just hope it happens here!
Does this mean we won't have to pay twice for books anymore to use them on the site? That would be dope
This was my first thought as soon as I saw the post... friggin' hope so.
Currently I only by the source books on dnd beyond and buy the physicals of the campaign books.
Still, I miss out on having certain spells and monsters on dnd beyond.
Congrats!!!!!
Oh. A suggestion. If someone buys a digital book possibly offer a coupon for the physical that I can take to my FLGS.
that way no logistics or codes in books.
Awesome! I'm hoping this leads to an easier and customize-able play experience for everyone. Would love to see discount and/or free digital copies with hardcover books and integration with multiple VTT platforms.
My one fear is that WotC is going to pick and choose the winners of the DnD third party universe with vertical integration. There are so many incredible applications made by the DnD community (VTTs, maps, etc.) and more being made every day. It would be a travesty to obliterate all of that by choosing one or two, and it would be such a powerful and supportive move to SUPPORT the third party space with easy integration between platforms. This game is great because we (the players) are in control of our experience, not the company.
Felt like DDB took a bit of a dive since the Fandom acquisition, but they obviously packaged it nice enough for WotC to finally acquire it (which really only makes sense). Hopefully development will keep pace with releases, at last.
Oh Wow! Congratulations! This is a huge development and I am so excited to see where this goes!
Awesome, can't wait to not buy another product now!
You could fairly easily have it so when you add an item to your inventory currently, there is a "Buy" option that subtracts the RAW price for the item from your money, if you have enough, and adds the item to your inventory only if you have enough. The harder part comes in with the curation by the DM of specific items or alternative prices. But it can be done - I programmed a basic version in PHP myself already.
