Below, we'll take a look at ten magic items new to the Dungeon Master's Guide, from a Common magic coin that can deal 2d4 Psychic damage to a Legendary scroll that can crack a continent in half. Let's dive in!

1. Potion of Pugilism

Potion, Uncommon

Violence is not always the answer—but when it is, drink this potion! The Potion of Pugilism is simple: After you drink it, for 10 minutes, each Unarmed Strike you make deals an extra 1d6 Force damage on a hit.

This item can be useful in any adventure, but it particularly shines at lower levels. A Monk's Martial Arts die is 1d6 until level 5, so using this potion, your low-level Monk would effectively deal as much damage as a Critical Hit on each hit.

Give this potion to the party member who would rather let their fists do the talking. But beware the taste: That canned spinach flavor might be jarring if you're not expecting it.

2. Pot of Awakening

Wondrous Item, Common

Previously seen in Xanathar's Guide to Everything, the Pot of Awakening is new to the Dungeon Master's Guide and ready to help you grow a new friend! Plant an ordinary shrub in this magical pot and wait patiently for 30 days, after which the shrub will transform into an Awakened Shrub. (This transformation destroys the pot.) The awakened shrub is Friendly towards you, and probably waiting to be named, or perhaps to share its name if it already has one.

An Awakened Shrub has a Challenge Rating of 0, deals 1d4 - 1 Slashing damage on a hit, and has 10 Hit Points, so your new buddy probably will not want to join you as an ally in battle. But I won't pass up an opportunity to ask my DM to roleplay as a talking plant, and you shouldn't either! 

3. Quarterstaff of the Acrobat

Weapon (Quarterstaff), Very Rare (Requires Attunement)

You would be hard-pressed to find a weapon more versatile than the Quarterstaff of the Acrobat. Fighters, Monks, and any character with the Polearm Master feat will love this new magic item.

First, the weapon grants you a +2 bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls made with it. Next, while holding the weapon, you can cause it to emit green Dim Light out to 10 feet as a Bonus Action or when you roll Initiative, so characters without Darkvision will at least be able to see foes in their immediate vicinity.

The weapon is also physically flexible. Using your Bonus Action, you can compress it down to 6 inches when it's time to stuff it under the Wizard's hat, elongate it out to 10 feet when you need to vault over a fence, or return it to its Quarterstaff form. And while it's in its Quarterstaff or 10-foot pole form, you have Advantage on Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks—like the one you'll make to launch yourself into the air—hopefully sparing you from any embarrassing falls mid-maneuver.

Additionally, while it is in its Quarterstaff form, the Quarterstaff of the Acrobat has the Thrown property (with a normal range of 30 feet and a long range of 120 feet). Seeing as it's a Quarterstaff, it also has the Topple mastery property.

With this combination, you can knock opponents Prone from a distance when you hit them with a thrown Quarterstaff attack, facilitating your escape from hungry monsters or foiling your enemy's attempt to flee. The Quarterstaff also magically flies back to your hand after you make a ranged attack in its Quarterstaff form.

Lastly, you can also use this weapon in its Quarterstaff form to deflect incoming attacks. When you are hit by an attack while holding it, you can take a Reaction to add +5 to your Armor Class against the triggering attack, potentially causing it to miss you.

Do note that this feature reads “When you are hit by an attack,” not “When you are hit by a melee attack,” or “ranged attack,” or, indeed, not even “weapon attack.” That's right: You can use the Quarterstaff of the Acrobat to deflect an incoming spell attack, such as an enemy Evoker Wizard's Arcane Burst. Once you use this property, you can't use it again until you complete a Short or Long Rest—a fair trade when you knock a Crown of Stars projectile into the dirt!

4. Rival Coin

Wondrous Item, Common

The Rival Coin is a whimsical, if dangerous, item best suited for players who enjoy risk. The “heads” and “tails” designs on the coin feature rivals, like Venger and Tiamat, Superman and Lex Luthor, or me and the ability to go to bed at a reasonable hour. It has 1 charge and regains its expended charge daily at dawn, so it's good for one use a day.

You can take a Magic action to toss the coin and expend its only charge; when the coin lands, its magic will lash out at an enemy of your choice or at you, depending on the result.

If the coin lands on heads, you can force a creature that you can see within 60 feet of you to make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 2d4 Psychic damage and has Disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. (On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage only.) However, if the coin lands on tails, you take 1d4 Psychic damage.

Use this item outside of a traditional combat encounter to surprise an NPC with a psychic blast! Or, take a calculated risk in combat to deal some damage and insulate yourself (or a party member) from retaliation!

5. Scroll of Titan Summoning

Scroll, Legendary

Why fight a terrifying monster yourself when you can get another terrifying monster to do it for you? When you use a Magic action to read the Scroll of Titan Summoning, a titan of the DM's choice (or the dice's) will appear within 1 mile of yourself.

What could possibly go wrong? Well, almost everything because the summoned titan is Hostile to all creatures. You may recite the scroll hoping for Godzilla (2014) and end up with Godzilla (1998).

Alas, if this scroll makes an appearance in your adventure, it will likely be in the hands of a villain. This is the type of magic item that a kingdom like Cormyr might keep in a vault with an “In case of apocalypse” label. When a traitorous archmage steals the Scroll of Titan Summoning, a group of powerful–say, level 16-20–adventurers must retrieve it before the realm finds itself on the wrong end of a Tarrasque!

You can't just hold up in a bunker and wait for it all to be over, either. The titan summoned by this scroll lasts until it's reduced to 0 Hit Points, at which point it disappears.

6. Shield of the Cavalier

Armor (Shield), Very Rare (Requires Attunement)

Shields are meant to keep you alive, and this one will do the trick.

The Shield of the Cavalier is instilled with powerful defensive magic, granting you a +2 bonus to your AC in addition to a Shield's normal bonus, but it's also got an offensive upside. With Forceful Bash, the Shield can be used as a weapon for one attack per Attack action, dealing 2d6 +2 (plus your Strength modifier) Force damage on a hit—as much as a Greatsword, +2 or Maul, +2!

When you hit with the Shield in this way, you can push a creature up to 10 feet away and, if it is your size or smaller, give it the Prone condition.

Also, when you or an ally within 5 feet are on the receiving end of an attack or area of effect, you can use this Shield's Protective Field property to create a 5-foot Emanation originating from you that only affects creatures fully contained within it. This Emanation functions much like the Otiluke's Resilient Sphere spell, allowing nothing to pass through. For up to 1 minute or as long as you maintain Concentration, the Emanation protects you from harmful effects but prevents you from doing much to affect the world outside it.

Use this property wisely, such as against an Ancient Red Dragon's Fire Breath or a Lich's Paralyzing Touch, because once you do, you cannot do so again until the next dawn.

7. Silvered Weapon

Weapon (Any Simple or Martial), Common

Silvered Weapons deal an additional damage die on a Critical Hit against any shape-shifted creature, wounding Werewolves and Dopplegangers who get too close.

This weapon previously appeared in the 2014 Player's Handbook, where it was a nonmagical item, but has been brought to the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide and upgraded to a Common magical item to give DMs another option for handing out low-rarity gear.

8. Spirit Board

Wondrous Item, Very Rare

Alright, who's ready for the next sleepover in Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion to get a little scary? The Spirit Board first appeared in Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft but has been brought to the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide to give more parties a chance to commune with the dead. It has 3 charges and features the letters of the alphabet on one side, alongside the words “Yes” and “No,” symbols representing “Weal” and “Woe,” and a small planchette.

While touching that planchette (and while it's on the lettered side of the board), you can take 1 minute and expend charges to cast the Augury (1 charge) or Commune (3 charges) spells, relying on the spirits of the afterlife to slide the planchette across the board and spell your answer in the letters on the board. You can ask for advice about a specific course of action or seek greater truths.

The dead know much, but can you trust them?

9. Sylvan Talon

Weapon (Dagger, Rapier, Scimitar, Shortsword, Sickle, or Spear), Common (Requires Attunement)

If I'm a Fey creature and I want to trick you with my wordplay, how can I do so if you can't understand me? I'll give you a Sylvan Talon, of course! This new magic weapon allows its wielder to understand the nonwritten communications of Fey, and they understand yours. It also allows you to use a Magic action to cast Message once per dawn.

If you come across this item, it's worth asking your DM: Does “nonwritten communication” include body language? Does it include any spoken words in any language, so long as they are spoken by Fey? Remember that whatever the answer is will apply to you as well, as the item works both ways.

If you're going to talk to the Fey, think like a Fey.

10. Thunderous Greatclub

Weapon (Greatclub), Very Rare (Requires Attunement)

Crank up your Strength, deal additional damage, destroy structures in your path, and knock your opponents Prone with the new Thunderous Greatclub. Barbarians will probably love this item for obvious reasons (smash), but it's a great fit for many Fighters, Paladins, and even Strength-based Rangers.

This weapon sets your Strength score to 20 (unless it is already equal to or greater than 20) and deals an additional 1d8 Thunder damage to creatures it hits and 3d8 Thunder damage to objects it hits that aren't being worn or carried. Use this massive damage to wreck any door blocking your way or split apart any lock. Heck, with that much damage, you could start smashing up vehicles.

When you want to disrupt your opponent's tactics, knock down that Ogre charging at you, or assist other martial allies, you can use the Greatclub to create a 30-foot Cone of thunderous energy that can knock enemies Prone.

But when it's time to bring down an entire building, you can slam the Thunderous Greatclub into the ground and create a localized earthquake. All structures in a 50-foot radius take 50 Bludgeoning damage, all creatures in that area must succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw or fall Prone and potentially drop Concentration, and a fissure opens up to swallow your enemies.

Don't settle for merely controlling the battlefield when you can destroy all the parts of it you don't like.
