Have you ever heard of the Cult of the Dragon? That order of fanatics who seek to crown evil dragons as the world's true rulers? Well, every cult has an ideological founder—the one who mistook prophecy for destiny, or genius for godhood. For the Cult of the Dragon, this was Sammaster.
Once a prodigy among archmages, Sammaster relentlessly pursued any scrap of knowledge about the magic of dragons. After studying with some of the Realms' brightest minds, like Elminster and Alustriel Silverhand, he took a malevolent turn and devised the rite that could twist a living dragon into a Dracolich.
So, do you want to spotlight this dangerous archmage as your campaign's BBEG? If so, keep reading—this article gives you everything you need to make Sammaster one of the toughest and most memorable villains your party has ever faced.

Tips for Running Sammaster

While the scope of your Forgotten Realms adventures is yours to decide, here are some crucial points to consider when including Sammaster in your campaign:
Cult of the Dragon Leader. Sammaster united scattered dragon zealots under a single, terrifying vision: undead dragons will inherit the world once the living have been wiped out. Through his brilliance, arcane might, and tyrannical teachings, he created the Cult of the Dragon—a sect of zealots and wyrms devoted to raising dracoliches and bringing about an age of eternal dragon rule. Recently, this cult has splintered, with some committing themselves to Tiamat, the evil Queen of Dragons.
Hard to Vanquish. Death isn't the end for Sammaster because of his lichdom. Ever paranoid, he prepared contingencies that mirrored the warped “resurrection” of dracoliches. Rather than keep a standard soul jar like other liches, he set his essence in a soul gem. Slay Sammaster in his lich form and, after some days, his dracolich form rises. Slay his dracolich form and, unless the gem is destroyed in time, Sammaster's lich form reforms to scheme anew.
Roleplaying Sammaster. This megalomaniacal mastermind presents as charming and confident—that is, until his morbid fascination with undead dragons and tyrannical rule bubbles to the surface. He trusts only the inner circle of his cult and tends to personally inspect critical plots, appearing where least expected to correct, coerce, or kill in order to ensure they succeed.
Setting Up Sammaster as Your Big Bad

Sammaster is an excellent campaign villain because his presence can be felt through all tiers of play. His plans typically ripple outward through the Cult of the Dragon, which is a great thread to follow for tier 1 adventures. Eventually, characters may notice rising unrest amongst dragonkind, which can carry the story through tier 2 and 3. Finally, as Sammaster enacts his final plan, characters may have to square off against this potent lich in all his necromantic might as a capstone to the campaign!
Foreshadowing Sammaster
Need some ideas to kick off your Sammaster-based adventures? You can use the seeds in the table below to announce the presence of Sammaster slowly throughout the course of your campaign.
| d6 | Event |
|---|---|
| 1 | Dragons across a region enter berserk rages without clear cause, abandoning hoards and territory. |
| 2 | A sacred spring that encased a legendary dragon's bones has been ransacked. |
| 3 | Jeweler's guilds from across the Realms report thefts of flawless obsidian gemstones while the rest of their stock remains untouched. |
| 4 | Masked cultists orchestrate thefts of a rare, petrified dragon egg. |
| 5 | A dragon ally is attacked while the party is away on another task. |
| 6 | A cult wearing black cloaks occupies a remote area and begins excavating ancient ruins in search of a draconic prophecy. |
Important Magic Items

Sammaster's story can take many forms, but his lore centers on three pillars: the rite of dracolich transformation, the soul gem that helps him cheat death, and the Cult of the Dragon. The below items are tied to these pillars and may help you run thematic adventures:
The Dracolich Rite
The ritual that births a dracolich is a perfect quest anchor. It is contained within the Tome of the Dragon, which will likely be in Sammaster's or the Cult of the Dragon's possession. Though, perhaps another adventuring party managed to scatter the pages before they were defeated by Sammaster, causing the Cult of the Dragon to begin a frantic search.
The Soul Gem
Sammaster's soul gem replaces a lich's typical soul jar. While it endures, destroying his lich body eventually births his dracolich form; defeating that dracolich without destroying the gem lets his lich form reconstitute.
If the Cult of the Dragon is looking to resurrect Sammaster, his soul gem could be the key. Maybe its power has been extinguished and needs a ritual to reignite. Perhaps, after the party defeats Sammaster's Dracolich form, the gem manages to elude the characters, leading to a desperate chase across the Realms.
Anything Dragon Related
The Cult of the Dragon certainly has a flair for the dramatic and obsession with anything draconic. This gives you the chance to use tons of fun dragon-themed items, like Dragon Scale Mail, a Cube of Summoning (Dragon), or even bringing the Orb of Dragonkind over from the Dragonlance setting.
Preview Sammaster's Stat Block

Sammaster is a CR 22 mastermind whose is notoriously difficult to defeat, even for adventurers at the height of their power. His Magic Resistance and Legendary Resistance traits and Protective Magic Reaction make it easy for him to shrug off even the most powerful spells. Meanwhile, he is difficult to pin down because of his ability to cast Invisibility, Wall of Force, and his Deathly Teleport Legendary Action.
As if that wasn't enough, he has an offensive arsenal of spells and deadly necrotic-infused attacks, like his Corrosive Burst, Paralyzing Touch, and the Disintegrate and Power Word Kill spells.
If the characters manage to defeat Sammaster in his lich form, their job isn't done. He is resurrected into his dracolich form after 1d10 days as long as his soul gem is intact, which—spoiler alert—is just as terrifying.
Confronting Sammaster
Sammaster's Minions
Sammaster will likely surround himself with a hierarchy of minions to carry out his plans, which typically includes zealots, dragons, and undead terrors. As the party progresses through the campaign, they'll have to deal with tougher and tougher monsters:
Cult Hierarchy. Expendable followers serve as Cultists and Cult Fanatics who kidnap, smuggle, and spend their blood for the cause. An Archmage with a cadre of Mages could handle the more arcane tasks, such as rites or research. Assassination and theft fall to Assassins and Noble agents quietly embedded in guilds and courts.
Undead Army. Anything Undead is on the menu thanks to Sammaster's talents in the necromantic arts. Ghouls, Ghasts, Wights, Mummies, Skeletons, and Zombies are excellent cannon fodder for the cause. A perfect culmination to a tier 3 arc is a showdown with one of Sammaster's very own Dracoliches.
Dragons as Pawns. Living dragons could also make an appearance in these adventures as coerced allies to Sammaster's cause. These could be tragic metallic dragons who are victims of an enchanting ritual, or proud chromatic terrors eager to “graduate” after being enthralled by Sammaster's offer of everlasting life.
Ideas for the Final Encounter
Having trouble coming up with the perfect, climactic conclusion to your Sammaster campaign? You can use the table below to help stoke your imagination!
Sammaster Climaxes
| d4 | Event |
|---|---|
| 1 | Sammaster teams up with Tiamat to reanimate five dragon corpses into a terrifying five-headed dracolich. |
| 2 | The party's dragon ally is captured and about to be sacrificed to supercharge Sammaster's soul gem. The party must infiltrate the Cult's headquarters and disrupt the ritual before it's too late. |
| 3 | Sammaster's soul gem is hidden inside a desecrated temple guarded by an army of undead. The party must break waves upon waves of resurrected creatures, then shatter the gem before Sammaster's dracolich form materializes. |
| 4 | A combination of mind-controlled dragons and Cult of the Dragon forces storm Candlekeep to recapture Sammaster's Tome of the Dragon, which is contained within. |
Is Your Party a Match for Sammaster?
Sammaster's genius and unique mechanics make him endlessly renewable: defeat the lich, and the dracolich rises; defeat the dracolich, and the lich returns—unless your heroes learn his secret and put a stop to him once and for all.
He's perfect for a campaign that wants dragons, magic, and the destruction they can cause.

Posted Oct 29, 2025Is it just me or is anyone kind of underwhelmed by his lich statblock? It is a good statblock overall but it just didn't much different than the normal lich one and I was hoping for something more unique truth be told.

Posted Oct 29, 2025I'm so excited for Sam's return. He's such a good villain, and while I love Acererak and Vecna, I'm glad we're getting more Forgotten Realms spesific BBEG villains.
I love that he can replace some of his attacks with a use of Spellcasting, this is something the standard Lich (2024) statblock is missing
I did notice he lacks Truesight though and feel like his Darkvision could be replaced with it. Best of both worlds being draconic senses + truesight, nothing getting the drop on him that way.
Also could his Create Undead be (level 8 version, as an action) so he can have the cool moment of summoning in 5 Ghouls on a whim. On the fly minion summoning is something I wish the regular lich had too, as well as maybe a Reaction use of their Deathly Teleport legendary action and some bonus Damage/Fear when they use Counterspell or Shield.
Looking forward to seeing some other villains like Manshoon perhaps :D

Posted Oct 29, 2025Article is decent, unfortunately after seing book can't say same about huge part of it's content
whole book is basically little small "do it yourself" staff, at this point i honestly see no reason to pay when i have so little fully cooked encounters and maps, i can make homebrew setting myself without paying wotc for half cooked one
secondary it's full of retcons or it didn't happen moments eg, as way as having some out of logic changes (I will take Icewind Dale s my favorite campaign)
Markham seriously larping "always young lenin"... he wasn't young during legacy, was even less young during rime but now 15 years later is just middle aged, I hope i see mystic story of Markham Button in future.
Main villain as 7 liches also doesn't make sense as it contradict Salvatore books, they got fully erased as far as i remember, also even ignoring taking a dump on Bobby (or in other cases Ed) writings, it's just not imposing, it look like generic warm-up abberation in mid chapter of a dungeon, just show this creature arts to your players and no one would consider it bbeg purely from the look of it
sure there is no more half species, but throwing existing half elf characters in full elf? idk, not sure Ed would have wanted it, but it's more corporate realms nowadays so it's not matter that much
Elk tribe leader undo all hengar development, Bjornhild and Isaar survival also make a little sense, dragon being stopped in Easthaven (nope it technically impossible in rime) and being much bigger than it's in Rime size, goliath feud never being fixed etc - honestly ir feels like WOTC don't want Rime players to play by this book with all such undoings
dougan hole change also making bigger leaps than spiraling of cyric into madness ok they are cruel guys, but other than that fine (Salvatore book and legacy) and they have mysterious stones> ok stones can summon very visible beast but only Isaar knows it, control beast and take 10 hands for summoning (King of the wolves) > almost all DH locals are inbreds, despite it never mentioned prior in any of Salvatore books (Rime) > now all inbreds are evil, know summoning ritual of Thruun, except now it's invisible and control locals... now we have local inbred raiders.... WTF, wotc making leaps to sterilize Avishkar, and now Calimshan because 1/100 of population that search how to be offended by everything gets offended, but make some ridiculous mockery and disabilities villification out of nowhere, like it wasn't in original lore, just why wotc did this
I might miss something but why Frost Giants need steaming vents when they are into such cold conditions?
Owl tribe wanting to dwell in underdark, idk reeks mental disability or head trauma of chieftain, underdark knowledge and how bad it is quite common at that point
Off screen killing of whole dwarven valley is very dirty, developing mining in termalaine (yep those guys that scared from 3 kobolds) counting this is even more ridiculous
on the opposite to DH - Calimshan seems no more edgy and bland; sterile from all dark ugly moments to a degree that i would rather play with City of Cats and Southlands by Kobold Press
Honestly i feel very non satisfied in book overall as it feel like mix of blandness for the sake of corporate umbrella approach that lack sufficient amount of adventure ready material, sometimes throwing lore in rubbish, sometimes parasiting on it creating circumstances that not real (oasis encounter is just bad rip off from earlier Salvatore books), sometimes cancelling obvious player choices from 5e adventures. It's not worst product but it doesn't feel good and is quite expensive - if i had options i would rather a la carte few statblocks as rest of product not resonate with my perception of DM quality or Toril lore at all
