You attempt to charm a humanoid you can see within range. It must make a Wisdom saving throw, and does so with advantage if you or your companions are fighting it. If it fails the saving throw, it is charmed by you until the spell ends or until you or your companions do anything harmful to it. The charmed creature regards you as a friendly acquaintance. When the spell ends, the creature knows it was charmed by you.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 1st. The creatures must be within 30 feet of each other when you target them.
If you don't have any spell slots then you can't cast a spell
Charm Person + Greater/Invisibility is a lot of fun to mess with people. Charm them, then turn invisible and convince them you are a ghost. Or their ancestor.
technically, you can still cast Cantrips ;)
The 1974 basic rules had an interesting twist in this spell. The spell potentially could be permanent because it only ended if:
The spell specifically says that you attempt to charm a 'humanoid' but I am wondering if you can try to charm Ettins or any other Giants given that they are not considered humanoids even thought they are intelligent creatures. Furthermore, what other intelligent creatures would you say that you should be able to charm? Really curious to hear from experienced DMs and players, thanks.
RAW, Charm Person only works on humanoids, so no it doesn't work on giants. The 4th level spell Charm Monster (published in Xanathar's Guide to Everything) is a better version that works on any creature type.
You could work with your DM to homebrew a Charm Giant spell if you really want to be able to do that at lower levels.
I’d 100% treat that as hostile it’s not 100% mind control but more like manipulation say we aren’t friends in fact I hate your guts and you wanna borrow cash from me maybe you use charm person charm person basically makes me think of you as a best friend maybe I’d be more inclined to give my best friend some pocket cash. and they get money out of me I would of never given other wise.
(Your party would probably go back to break that guys knee caps after the hours up after they realized they’red been charmed and Tricked)
Is this a cantrip?
It can,
1. Artificer infusion
2. Replicate Magic Item
3. Eyes of charming
Bam. 3 uses of charm person a day.
I saw an instance wherein a charmed person was told to guard the door. Her companions approached the door and she attacked them. Later, she was told outright to attack her friend. RAW, do you think Charm Person is that strong? I could see a charmed person trying to convince their friends to stop at the door but attacking them seems beyond the pale to me.
no
No, this is not mind control or a dominate spell. The ONLY thing it does is make the CASTER seem to be a friendly acquaintance.
Then it is up to the dm to judge what a normal friendly aquaintance would do for that person. But why would someone attack a friend because a friendly acquaintance told you to?
For instance, if you stole money from al Capone and then cast charm person on Al Capone to tell him to let you go, he would murder you anyways cause al would murder a friend over theft.
There is no control of character, I think people look at the computer versions which usually is a dominate version.
Good post overall, but this bit is not quite right, because the spell does apply the Charmed condition, which includes in its description: "A charmed creature can't attack the charmer or target the charmer with harmful abilities or magical effects."
So Al may still want to murder the caster, but would strangely find himself unable to do so until the charm ends. He could absolutely murder the rest of the party though, and he could probably even order his underlings to murder the caster.
Yeah, this has been quite nerfed from earlier editions. For example, the Charmed humanoid might have to weigh their new friend's opinion against that of their existing party members/friends. The Charmed condition prevents attacks by that person against the Charmer, but other party members can still attack them.
What's confusing is that there are other effects that have similar names with much different results. For instance the Vampire's Charm ability lasts longer and says "The charmed target regards the vampire as a trusted friend to be heeded and protected." [presumably from existing party members also]
Cast Disguise Self before you charm someone so you can hide your identity while the spell is in effect. Play it right, and they'll never know you were the person who charmed them.
What happens when you charm a charmed humanoid. Especially if the two charming spellcasters try to get the charmed humanoid to take opposing actions?
From the end of Chapter 10 of the Player's Handbook:
So, in the case of Charm Person, assuming both spellcasters are using the same level of slot, the more recent casting of the spell would prevail.
When casting Charm Person on an NPC, and they succeed the Saving Throw, are they immediately aware that you attempted to cast a spell on them?
Also if trying to avoid a conflict with a group, would casting Charm Person on one NPC likely to alert the entire group?
I had a session where an NPC resisted the spell then the entire room turned hostile. This is with the target of the spell being 30ft away, and all other NPC's being well over 30ft away. I guess it's up to the DM how recognisable a spell is, but in that situation I would've thought that the caster would have had to have been shouting the verbal parts and doing an entire breakdance routine.
Why on my level 20 druid is the save for only this spell a lower dc than the rest of my spell saves?
