Magical darkness spreads from a point you choose within range to fill a 15-foot-radius sphere for the duration. The darkness spreads around corners. A creature with darkvision can't see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can't illuminate it.
If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn't being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it. Completely covering the source of the darkness with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the darkness.
If any of this spell's area overlaps with an area of light created by a spell of 2nd level or lower, the spell that created the light is dispelled.

No, you dont get any such advantage.
Just because the target cant see you, doesnt mean they dont get a save. It also doesnt get disadvantage or anything like that. Its just a normal save.
However, you do make attack roles with advantage, if the attack originates within the Darkness, since you are heavily obscured, which means when it comes to seeing you, the target is basically blinded.
Silent casting also does not affect the Saving throws.
It says in the spell description that creatures with dark vision can’t see through the area of effect, so you couldn’t see the other side of the area.
does this spell make the object a magical object or is it just a aura
THANK YOU
Reading all of these comments has been bothering me greatly. The laws of physics need to be taken into account int D&D. Light travels in a straight line (save for when it is refracted by a transparent object such as glass or water, or reflected off of a surface).
If a creature inside the darkness is blinded and cannot see light outside of it, then that means any light traveling toward the darkness stops once it hits it. It can't stop and then continue on the other side of it. Notice how whenever there are dark rain clouds blocking the sun, you can't see it. This spell would do the same thing.
However, if the object creating light on one side of the darkness is bright enough, and the darkness isn't in a narrow hall or something, theoretically, light could reflect off of surrounding surfaces to emit a dim light on the opposite side, but that argument would need to be made to the GM in the moment.
However, if light cannot travel into it, light cannot travel through it. The laws of physics do not permit that.
"If any of this spell's area overlaps with an area of light created by a spell of 2nd level or lower, the spell that created the light is dispelled."
Okay, wait, does this mean that if this spell overlaps with an area of the spell Moonbeam casted with a 2nd level spell slot, then it's dispelled? If so, that's interesting, as Moonbeam is a spell that causes damage, and it not just about casting light.
Or blindfighting fighting style
By definition darkness magical or otherwise confers the blinded condition. Same beast skinned differently
According to PHB, Drow can cast Darkness with the Drow Magic trait.
As such, can they just summon the darkness at will without expending their action on their turn? Or does the darkness still need to be cast as a spell and hence using up their action?
Drow Magic. You know the Dancing Lights cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Faerie Fire spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can CAST the Darkness spell once and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
You CAST the spell, meaning that you have to use the regular casting time (being 1 action)
Equipment Torch: A torch burns for 1 hour, providing bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet. If you make a melee attack with a burning torch and hit, it deals 1 fire damage.
Darkness creates a heavily obscured area. Characters face darkness outdoors at night (even most moonlit nights), within the confines of an unlit dungeon or a subterranean vault, or in an area of magical darkness.
Dim light, also called shadows, creates a lightly obscured area. An area of dim light is usually a boundary between a source of bright light, such as a torch, and surrounding darkness. The soft light of twilight and dawn also counts as dim light. A particularly brilliant full moon might bathe the land in dim light.
A heavily obscured area—such as darkness, opaque fog, or dense foliage—blocks vision entirely. A creature effectively suffers from the blinded condition when trying to see something in that area.
So, the way the Darkness Spell it put in with regular darkness ties them together. The difference being that darkvision doesn't work and non magical light can't illuminate it. The problem with figuring out if you can see out of it. Can you still see the torch if you're 41ft away? The game says you're in darkness and is a heavily obscured area which causes the blinded condition. Does that mean you can't see in the area you're in, but can still see outside that area?
actually, it can't be seen unless surrendered by magical light. I see what you are thinking though.
No, it can be surrendered by magical light. So until then, it is blinded
I have a tiefling fighter and this is nice! Blind my enemies! They should change thamaturgy though. THERE IS NO POINT IN CASTING IT. But i see why they would make it though
The question is, can the *caster* see within the sphere of darkness? The spell description doesn’t say.
Unless you have a feature that specifically lets you see within it, such as the one granted to Shadow Sorcerers or the Devil's Sight invocation, Darkness blocks the caster's vision like everyone else.
“Non magical light can’t illuminate it” so no the campfire can’t be seen, it’s just saying no one even those with dark vision or a lantern can see.
I think it means people with darkvision cant see through it or in it and magical light can illuminate it.
Tremorsense doesn’t help very much here. Tremorsense only reveals the location of a creature, in the same way that an invisible creature’s location is known unless they have taken a successful Hide action. So a creature with Tremorsense would still suffer from the same advantages and disadvantages as one with normal vision.
Is there a minimum range?
soooo, this spell lists components. If I am a level2 warlock does that mean that I have to use the components to cast this?
