You touch a corpse or other remains. For the duration, the target is protected from decay and can't become undead.
The spell also effectively extends the time limit on raising the target from the dead, since days spent under the influence of this spell don't count against the time limit of spells such as raise dead.
* - (a pinch of salt and one copper piece placed on each of the corpse's eyes, which must remain there for the duration)

Posted May 3, 2023I love this spell. A second level spell that only needs 2 copper and a pinch of salt (which isn't CONSUMED, but is required to stay on the target for the duration, so... Yeah.) and preserves creatures corpses for 10 days?
This spell is used by merchants, butchers, and anyone else that might be involved in the market off meat.
Freshly caught fish, persevered by a pinch of salt, for the cost of 2 copper coins, until it arrives to sold? No need to seal it, or keep it cool, they just need to make sure the coins don't come loose, and that it arrives somewhere the spell can be recast, within 10 days? Point express meets food shipping and delivery.
Talk about a world transforming spell. Customers are then instructed to remove the coins when ready to consume, and eat within 10 days of removal.
Good thing for the preserves and rush shipping industry that the spell doesn't work on vegetation.

Posted Oct 20, 2025But the spell states it "extends the time limit for certain spells". Revivify needs the target to be dead for no more than 1 minute, BUT with Gentle Repose, that can be extended indefinitely, or just 10 days and however many seconds remaining on the clock to revive.
Recasting within 10 days should only reset the timer, so if you cant keep a lvl 2 spell slot to restart that timer, WITHIN the 10 days since last cast, that is a YOU problem.

Posted Oct 22, 2025The situation in question is a case where the time limit for revivify has passed already (i.e. the question was "Would it extend revivify if its past the 1 minute already?"). The time limit extension works thusly: "days spent under the influence of this spell don't count against the time limit of spells such as raise dead". If enough time has already passed to disqualify revivify, it doesn't matter that time spent under Gentle Repose doesn't further count against the limit, as the limit has already been reached. All the time spent before Gentle Repose has been cast still exists.
