Choose a humanoid that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed for the duration. At the end of each of its turns, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the spell ends on the target.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you can target one additional humanoid for each slot level above 2nd. The humanoids must be within 30 feet of each other when you target them.

On my character sheet, I can't see that Hold Person is a concentration spell. On this page, it shows.
edit: It doesn't show up in the tooltip.
Yea adding a note to this to clarify about concentration.
The way I'm reading this, if a mob goes after you in initiative, a mob gets two saves in the first round, is this right?
The initial save, plus another save come it's turn?
Yes, that's correct.
Hey does any one know if there is a spell that can freeze time for certain people/ characters and what its call im writing my own story for dnd and i thought this would be a cool side mission or as a main storyline
To my understanding you’re paralyzing an individual. This would have no effect on things outside of the person such as gravity or time. They are not in a sense “suspended” they are just paralyzed. Therefore, I would follow the rules on paralysis.
Time stop it's 9th level spell for sorcerer and wizard ... I think
Comparing this to Hideous Laughter: If you have access to HL, then it's almost as good as this and only a level 1 spell:
Main downside of HL is that the target gets a saving throw with advantage if you deal them damage, while HP seems to let you smack them around without worrying. This could be a big advantage for HP if you have AoE or other "out of control" damage going on, but there's a lot of ways to work around it as long as the person is incapacitated (which HL is very good at).
Interesting to compare them!
I think for a Warlock with Level 2 spell slots, HP is the no brainer, especially because at higher levels it will hold more people. If it weren't for the limited "spells known" for Warlocks, I'd want to have both of these spells for greater versatility, at least until Warlock lvl 5 when Hold Person starts holding two people instead of 1.
@jerclarke:
The comparison is valid but remember: This can be cast at any level higher than it's own with advantages, and the flexibility should you need it. But most importantly - A target of HL is incapacitated, a target of HP is PARALYZED. Hits on creatures paralyzed are automatically critical hits if the attacker is within 5ft. That is SUPREMELY powerful combined with proper movement and powerful attacks. The humanoid limitation is well worth the reward given certain builds and tactics.
Don't forget that Hold Person has the "paralyzed" condition, which means that any hit from an attacker within 5 feet is a critical hit. That's a considerable advantage over Hideous Laughter.
While reading this it says that the person becomes paralyzed, which means they are also incapacitated. Does becoming incapacitated break concentration? It doesn’t say it under the effect but I have seen some debate on this.
Wait what is the DC of the wisdom saving throw that the affected creature must succeed on?
Casting word is:
Identitus Paralyzium
Always the spell dc of the person who casts it
What happens at the point a Humanoid targeted by this spell, who is held by this spell, has polymorph cast on them? I have a friend/DM who suggests that RAW because you are no longer a humanoid, that the spell instantly ends... But I cannot, for the life of me, find that rule anywhere, in any of the books. I've checked sage advice as well. I found a Mearl ruling stating that it would continue, and I found a JC ruling stating that there are no rules, but he suggests that how he would rule it, is that the target is no longer valid, and would thus end....
Anyone know of any rule to confirm this?
There are no rules, JC confirms there are no rules, here's an SE thread on the topic: https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/133379/is-a-spell-suppressed-or-removed-when-the-target-temporarily-becomes-invalid
I concur with the second answer since there are no rules saying the spell ends, it keeps going. I would say that is RAW. JC's ruling is not RAW, not RAI, just their own ruling.
Ninth level spell Time stop... Stops time for everyone but the caster
Yes. It's called time stop. It's 9th level.
Is an Ogre a "humanoid" for the purposes of this spell? I've seen Answers both ways...
Nope. A "humanoid" is any creature with the humanoid creature type. Ogres don't have the humanoid type, they have the "giant" type
