Lightning
A stroke of lightning forming a line 100 feet long and 5 feet wide blasts out from you in a direction you choose. Each creature in the line must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 8d6 lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
The lightning ignites flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 3rd.

Posted Oct 27, 2022I can't equip this spell on my one of my players characters. I'm not sure how to fix the issue. I even just purchased the master subscription in hopes that would fix it. Any help would be appreciated. I'm very new here.

Posted Nov 25, 2022You say that, but when you are walking down a 100 ft long hallway filled with 100 enemies in a line that all have on average 8d6 health or less and you roll first on initiative, this spell absolutely slaps.

Posted Nov 27, 2022Which is exactly what I said: "There are specific and limited applications to this usage."
How often is a situation like that likely to happen? Not very often. Therefore it's not OP. OP would imply you could kill hundreds of enemies easily in most situations, not only in very specific ones. If you have Lightning prepared when you get put into a situation like this, then hell yeah, light them up. You're being rewarded for having the exact right tool for the job.

Posted Jul 22, 2023I know this was posted over three years ago, but I think others may find it useful if I provide my own house rule here.
If the character is straight-up not a spellcaster, I would model that as 8 + the character's Intelligence modifier. I chose Intelligence, because the magic would come purely from the character's intuition and ability to reason, not from training of any sort. A character would need to be able to figure out an incredibly complex system very quickly in order to be able to do much, thus warranting the use of Intelligence. Sidenote, spell attack modifiers would use the same logic with this ruling, equalling the character's Intelligence modifier.
If the character is a spellcaster, I would just use their spellcasting save DC, regardless of whether or not they normally have the ability to cast that particular spell. Save DCs and attack modifiers represent more than just how capable you are of casting the spells you know, they represent your proficiency in working with the Weave itself. That applies universally, so even if you can't normally cast that particular spell, you nonetheless add your proficiency bonus.

Posted Oct 12, 2023This is so significantly worse than fireball, for no good reason.
At the VERY least, it should be a 10 feet wide line.

Posted Oct 21, 2023It's better than Fireball in single-enemy combat and when you don't want to attack party members.
Also less monsters and enemies have resistance or immunity to lightning damage than fire damage.

Posted Oct 22, 2023On single enemy combat, don't cast lightning bolt or fireball. Those are both subpar uses of a 3rd level slot.

Posted Dec 5, 2024I don't see your point? The designers of 5e and many other people have stated that fireball is "ver over-powered" (with it's damage alone) for its level, and that it was meant to be that way, even though it brakes the game balance. I can only assume that lightning bolt is similar.

Posted Mar 23, 2025The AOE is harder to use than fireball, which does the same damage at the same spell level. The main advantage of this spell is lightning damage is resisted by fewer creatures than fire damage.
