You touch a dead creature that has been dead for no more than a century, that didn't die of old age, and that isn't undead. If its soul is free and willing, the target returns to life with all its hit points.
This spell neutralizes any poisons and cures normal diseases afflicting the creature when it died. It doesn't, however, remove magical diseases, curses, and the like; if such effects aren't removed prior to casting the spell, they afflict the target on its return to life.
This spell closes all mortal wounds and restores any missing body parts.
Coming back from the dead is an ordeal. The target takes a −4 penalty to all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. Every time the target finishes a long rest, the penalty is reduced by 1 until it disappears.
Casting this spell to restore life to a creature that has been dead for one year or longer taxes you greatly. Until you finish a long rest, you can't cast spells again, and you have disadvantage on all attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.
* - (a diamond worth at least 1,000 gp, which the spell consumes)
1000 gp is nothing to most adventurer's.
I don't know about your PCs, but mine tend to spend their cash as soon as they earn it. Like, seriously... "We have 5k gold!? Okay, where can I buy a slightly more magic sword?"
Good point
"I've got gems! Your wizard could do a lot with --"
"Nah, gimme that sweet +2! Hammer Time!"
Yes but a 1000gp diamond might be exceedingly rare. That's up to you as a DM.
If I use Wish to cast this spell, do I still suffer this effect?
Why not just use Wish to cast True Resurrection instead?
Because wish can cast any 8th level or lower spell as a surety, with no cost. True resurrection is 9th level, and thus risks the 33% chance of never being able to cast wish again.
Oh, sorry I forgot True Resurrection is Level 9
That makes sense then
Because you could completely lose your ability to cast wish if you roll bad?
Yeah as I said before I forgot True Resurrection was level 9. I thought it was level 8, which is why I asked
I would say that since Wish specifies it replicates the *effects* of a spell, it isn't casting it per RAW. As always though, it's a DM choice matter.
this is very situational I think most players would go for revivify or raise dead
Well typically you'll have a Cleric and they'll just prepare this when they need to use it then get rid of it. It's supposed to be longer reaching but most of the time that reach extends past the needs of adventurers, so I wouldn't pick this as a Bard, to be honest.
Question: Does the penalty add on to their modifiers, or all they just -4, no more bonuses
I believe it's all modifiers
If they body is missing a head, would you be able to resurrect them using this spell?
"This spell closes all mortal wounds and restores any missing body parts." So yes this spell would resurrect them and give them a new head
Everything's better with Molly
They're one level away
And last night they talked about going back for him
Taliesin might need to clone himself O_o
