The wood of a club or quarterstaff you are holding is imbued with nature's power. For the duration, you can use your spellcasting ability instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of melee attacks using that weapon, and the weapon's damage die becomes a d8. The weapon also becomes magical, if it isn't already. The spell ends if you cast it again or if you let go of the weapon.

Posted Sep 4, 2021You don't need to homebrew it. If you don't like a spell, don't take it. Making it scale like damaging cantrips would have been lazy on the writers' part. This spell isn't a damaging cantrips. It's a buff cantrip. You make a stick into a frankly excellent weapon. No weapon? Oh, look. A stick. Now you have a magic weapon with a d8 for a damage die that uses a primary ability modifier for attack and damage rolls without wasting concentration. Do you really want a wisdom-based 5th level ranger with the druidic fighting style to feasibly be dealing 2d8+5 magical damage with a +8 to hit on each of its attacks and also have the option of an off-hand weapon attack with all of the options for additional damage based on class and subclass features or spells on top of that? Personally, I don't think a cantrip should be significantly better than second level (or higher) spells.

Posted Nov 11, 2021Agreed. The people who argue that it should scale don’t understand what it does.
For only the cost of one bonus action per minute, you have a One handed melee weapon with 1D8+mod magic bludgeoning damage using your WIS modifier.
Think about it. What would you need to make a similar weapon attack without Shillelagh? High STR? Or high DEX with a Finesse weapon? The only simple weapon with that damage is the two handed greatclub, otherwise you have to go martial weapons. The fact that, as you said, it’s a stick means that you could pick up any small branch and use it, it’s cheap as! (A cool DM may even allow you to flavour it as carved wooden knuckles).
This spell gives you what is considered a base requirement for any melee fighters (A decent weapon which used a high mod), and for a Druid, allowes you to use your primary spell casting stat instead of wasting resources on STR.
The perceived weakness of this spell is that it’s wasted on the Druid. The Druid does not get any extra attacks or innate abilities which boost melee damage. Without Extra attacks or such, Primal Savagery does more damage from level 5 and up. And most melee druids are more likely to use their Wildshape to fight anyway. This is why people think it should scale, weapon attacks in general are useless for high level druids.
You can, of course, take one level in druid and multi class to other classes, or use Magic Initiative. This on a melee Cleric means you have equivalent to a one handed Warhammer without wasting points on STR(beyond minimum needed to wear whichever armour you’re using) assuming WIS is your highest stat.
This is, however, where Shillelagh’s usefulness wanes again. No other class uses WIS as a primary stat. A melee Ranger might have high WIS, but it competes with the arguably more important DEX and using a finesse weapon. Everything else, WIS is ‘nice to have’, but unlikely important enough to supersede other primary attack stats such as STR or DEX. Could be useful for a low level monk, but Martial Arts will supersede it. You could arguably make a WIS based fighter with a staff, but at that point you’re doing it for the theme (which is not a bad thing), rather than being optimal.
If Shillelagh used CHA or INT, it could be a different story. Paladins would take it no questions asked and forget about strength, Wizards and Sorcerers may consider it if going for a melee build, but it would still be a toss up over DEX and Finesse.
Warlock may use Pact of the Tome to take it, but any serious melee lock is going to go Pact of the Blade and Hexblade.
Shillelagh is one of those cool spells and abilities which allow you to use a different stat for weapon attack and damage, but it’s on a class and uses a stat which limits its ability. Which is probably a good thing, on other classes, using a different stat, it would be OP for a cantrip.
Still, it’s cool if you want to go to the effort to use it thematically.

Posted Nov 17, 2021Not really. It just means your magic stick is a magic pokey stick, same numbers as a staff, is versatile and it can be thrown (but the spell ends when the weapon leaves her hand).
