Base Class: Artificer
An archaeologist is an artificer who is an expert at exploring the world and uncovering it's secrets, as well as tinkering with their inventions.
These artificers actively seek out forgotten technology and hidden arcana from the world around them; often lost to time in ancient tombs or lost empires. Many learn how to incorporate these timeless secrets into their own craft. Much like other artificers, Archaeologists progress the boundaries of modern knowledge, but they tend to draw upon the intellect of those before them, in addition to drawing from their own minds.
Tool Proficiency
3rd-Level Archaeologist Feature
You gain proficiency with your choice of either cartographer's tools or calligrapher's supplies. If you already have these proficiencies, you instead gain proficiency with one other type of artisan’s tools of your choice.
Archaeologist Spells
3rd-level Archaeologist feature
You always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Archaeologist Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Archaeologist's Logbook
You have become adept in understanding the magical lore you discover on your travels. You craft a special book called a Logbook, which you can use as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells.
You can inscribe magical rituals discovered on your travels into your Logbook. Choose two 1st-level spells that have the ritual tag from any class’s spell list (the two needn’t be from the same list). The spells appear in the book and don’t count against the number of spells you know. With your Logbook in hand, you can cast the chosen spells as rituals. You can’t cast the spells except as rituals, unless you’ve learned them by some other means.
On your adventures, you can add other ritual spells to your Logbook. When you find such a spell, you can add it to the book if the spell’s level is equal to or less than half your artificer level (rounded up) and if you can spare the time to transcribe the spell. For each level of the spell, the transcription process takes 2 hours and costs 50 gp for the rare inks needed to inscribe it.
Explorer's Intuition
5th-level Archaeologist Feature
You have learned much from your journeys into the world. You have documented this knowledge in your Logbook, and regularly consult it's pages to bolster your future exploits. As a result, whenever you make a Perception or Survival check, you gain a bonus to the check equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of +1).
In addition, you can add half your proficiency bonus, rounded down, to any Intelligence or Wisdom check you make in which you aren't already proficient.
Learned Recovery
5th-level Archaeologist Feature
You have learned to draw on the reserves of your magical energy when consulting your Logbook. Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined level that is equal to or less than 1/3 your artificer level (rounded up), and none of the slots can be 4th level or higher.
For example, if you’re a 5th-level artificer, you can recover up to two levels worth of spell slots. You can recover either one 2nd-level spell slot or two 1st-level spell slots.
Arcane Transcription
9th-level Archaeologist Feature
You become more proficient in your ability to transcribe spells into your Logbook. When you copy a spell into your Logbook, the time taken now equals 5 minutes per spell level, and the inks required instead costs 25 gp per spell level.
Additionally, as you explore the world, can document your arcane understandings into your Logbook for your own use.
- When you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell of a level for which you have spell slots, you can use your reaction to make an Arcana (Intelligence) equal to 10 + twice the spell's level.
- On a success, you gain an understanding of the spell which you can replicate using your Artificer skillset (the spell needn't be from the Artificer spell list). You can transcribe the spell into your Logbook in the same manner in which you transcribe rituals. If you do so, the spell counts as an Artificer spell for you, but doesn't count against your number of spells known.
- If you do not transcribe the spell before completing your next long rest, your knowledge of the spell is lost, and you cannot add it to your Logbook unless you see the spell being cast again, and succeed a further Arcana (Intelligence) check to understand it.
- You can learn a number of spells equal to 1/3 of your Artificer level (round down). If you try to exceed your maximum number of Arcane Transcription spells known, you must select an existing spell to unlearn before you can transcribe another.
Master Archaeologist
15th-level Archaeologist Feature
You can traverse the deepest corners of civilisation with ease.
- You gain a bonus to initiative equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum +1), and you are immune to the surprise condition.
- Whenever you make an Investigation or Survival check, you may roll the check with advantage.
- You have advantage on saving throws against both natural hazards and engineered traps.
- Moving through difficult terrain of any source costs you no extra movement. You can also pass through nonmagical terrain without taking damage from it if it has thorns, spines, or a similar hazard.
