While you might not get the bonuses from an attuned item if you aren't holding it, you ARE still attuned to it unless you short rest while focusing on unattuning, someone else attunes to it, you're more than 100ft away from it for more than 24 hours, or you die.
I'll admit, it's a little niche and is more inconvenient than breaking anything, but it's something to consider while coding.
Note that with DDB you usually "Equip" more than 2 weapons, since it works very well to make sure all your available weapons show up in Actions for the purposes of creating a PDF with your available attacks, or as reference. If you want to stay attuned to a magic weapon but not have it show up in Attacks, customize it to uncheck the Display As Attack checkbox. If you want the magic item to be attuned but out of your possession, keep it Equipped but Move it to a container that you don't have equipped (unchecked the box to the left of the container on your character sheet.) That way it stays attuned but won't count against your carry weight.

It actually didn’t used to unattune items when unequipped, but if someone inadvertently removed the item from their sheet without first unattuning it, and didn’t remember the exact item, that attunement slot would end up permanently allocated to an item the character no longer even had. So they changed it about a year ago I think. I suggested making the [REMOVE] button nonfunctional while the item was attuned to resolve the problem. They went with this idea instead. 🤷♂️

Yes, that is a limitation of the system.
