Hi folks! I was wondering if there had been any success in allowing dungeon masters or players to swap in alternate background features into character sheets for campaigns, i.e.: those mentioned in Hoard of the Dragon Queen? I'm really hoping to use this in a future campaign and am trying to get all my ducks in a row as soon as possible. Thanks in advance!
P.S.: The last time this was brought up in the forums was apparently just over 2 years ago? (2017) Please let me know if I'm missing something?
Sincerely; A very happy but slightly confused DM

Easiest is to create a homebrew background that is a clone of original with the background feature changed. That is how the Avernus backgrounds are handled.
The reason they are not selectable is because they are not complete backgrounds, only features. You can make a homebrew background and copy and paste them in.
I know that they're not full backgrounds, I just was wondering why unlocked content required a homebrew background in order to input the optional background feature option. It seems a little less than efficient when it could just be coded in. It would be a replacement effect with a dropdown menu, that's all I'm getting at.

Seeing as these optional features can be used on any and all existing backgrounds, there's no current elegant way to program them in without changing how backgrounds work in the character builder. It doesn't currently allow for option selection within a background. They've found solutions for the Baldur's Gate variant backgrounds by providing alternate versions, but this would require them to literally triple the number of backgrounds by creating copies of every background with the feature replaced with each option.

Looking for the same. Does anyone know when/if this is supposed to work soon? I couldn’t find it yet.
