I created a homebrew creature, then shared it with the public. After sharing I'm no longer able to make any edits, which I did not expect. There is a "create new version" link, but clicking it does nothing.
Clicking the “Create New Version” button adds a new version to Your Homebrew Creations every time you click/tap it. You can edit the new version and publish it. It won’t replace the old version, that’s now out there forever and ever, but the new version will be more visible to people. In future, always take time to fully playtest and edit your homebrews prior to publishing. For more useful information about homebrewing on DDB, please see the Homebrewer’s “How To” FAQ: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq).
Thanks for the explanation. But that is a poor user experience, if I may say. So let me share some feedback:
First, a small thing: Clicking on “Create New Version” appears to do nothing. If it actually does something in the background (and indeed, looking at my homebrew creations, there were now 7 copies there), at least show the user a message to inform them of that. Or just navigate them to the new copy in the first place.
More importantly: Why not allow edits after publishing? Perhaps just force a version number to increment. Or at least allow the creator to deprecate an old design and link it to the new one. (Adding homebrew material to a character sheet makes a local copy, so edits would never change anyone's game anyway.)
